Category: Legendary Scottish Beall Ancestry
While the name was generally spelled Beall in Maryland, it was most often spelled Bell in Scotland.
Because of the prominence of Colonel Ninian Beall in Maryland colonial history, a number of attempts have been made to trace his ancestry, and that of other early Maryland Bealls, back to Scotland.
The results have been a combination of documented fact, embellishments, and outright fiction. Each of the Scottish Bell ancestors of Maryland Bealls in one way or another has become part of the legend, in which there is a special need to separate fact from fiction.
Many personal genealogies found on the internet show Dr. James Beall and his wife Anne Marie Calvert as major ancestors of most Bealls in Maryland. Unfortunately, no documented facts have been found for either the life events, the children, or even the existence of these two persons.
