Although the role and responsibilities have changed over time, The Right Honourable Lord Provost of Glasgow is the convener of the Glasgow City Council and as such, acts in the capacity of Mayor. Today, they are elected by the city councillors and serve not only as the chair of that body, but as a figurehead for the entire city.

In feudal times they maintained the city guard.

The Lord Provost of the City of Glasgow, by virtue of office, is also:

  • Lord-Lieutenant of the County of the City of Glasgow
  • a Commissioner of Northern Lighthouses.

Wikipedia retains a listing of all those that held the office of the Lord Provost of Glasgow.
