Free Records for Memorial Day, 2021

Question

Ancestry announced free access to all military records on Fold3 this Memorial Day Weekend; you could find your family members in records extending back to the Revolutionary War.

The entire Fold3 site records may be free this weekend; they did do that in 2020 for the Memorial Day weekend.

Thanks for providing this heads-up, Sheryl.

Your message focused on U.S. records, which made me wonder if Fold3 also has non-U.S. military material. My brief visit to the site indicates that there are also some records for the U.K., Australia, and other nations (I found an English translation of a German report on German World War II plans and actions), so the free weekend may be worthwhile for our cousins from around the world.

With Memorial Day Monday being a United States holiday, only US Military Records are free this weekend.  The site has other nation's military records, but they aren't included in the free link.  The free records include all US War Military from the Revolutionary War to current.

If I could, I would make all records on every site free all the time!

Well, I do think this free records offering goes beyond the U.S. I did find a report of German military plans and actions in Italy in World War II, and just now (when I searched for Sofia as a place) I turned up some records for German and British military killed in action in World War II. This is looking like it could be a good opportunity for more than just Americans.

Even better! I created a profile for my 2x great grandfather and got paper records in 1985 B.C. (before computers) for his Civil War service; I just downloaded the records from Fold3 and will use those citations.
