Looking for ancestry of my g-g-g-g-grandfather Joel Staley

Hi, I have a brick wall trying to confirm any details about my ancestor Joel Staley's birth and parents.  He is my g-g-g-g-grandfather and is buried in the "family cemetery" so I know all about his later life but not origins.  I have recently persuaded my late father's brother to do a DNA test and I'm wondering which test would be most helpful in this situation.  Thanks!

Rhoda, I would add a DNA tag to this question to get the best answers from those that know.

All I can tell you is if it is your paternal line, the most important test would be the YDNA test of the highest level that you can afford.  The "Big Y" will give you the best results, but also the most expensive.

Autosomal will give you results from all connections and the most results.

MtDNA will give you results from your materanl side.
