Research Notes

DBE suggested death date should be "November 1325", linking to a page citing German wikipedia as the source. Richardson says he died "shortly before 1 April 1325",[1] so the dbe was marked as false. ~ Noland-165, 16 June 2020

On Hugh being a son of James Audley and Ela Longespée, please see Cokayne's Complete Peerage, revised edition, Vol. 1, p. 338, footnote a, viewable here: https://archive.org/details/completepeerageo01coka/page/338/mode/2up. This suggests that there may be some good evidence for the parentage. There may be other things in sources cited in Cokayne, including on Hugh's own entry in Cokayne, pp. 347-8, viewable at https://archive.org/details/completepeerageo01coka/page/346/mode/2up. And there may be evidence in other sources too. We would not want to dismiss the parentage without very good evidence that it is wrong.

The ODNB entry for James Audley accepts Hugh as son of James and Ela. It names five sons, of whom Hugh is one.

Hugh Audley very definitely existed. He was a historical person. When the profile is developed, there is more that can be added to the bio, and we can see if the sourcing for his parentage can be strengthened.

I just responded while you were commenting that there are several references for his parentage. I replied with the sourcing below.

The parentage of Hugh de Audley is in two Douglas Richardson works, namely Plantagenet Ancestry and Royal Ancestry.
  • [S5] Douglas Richardson, Plantagenet Ancestry, p. 670.
  • [S6] Douglas Richardson, Plantagenet Ancestry: 2nd Edition, Vo. I, p. 146.
  • [S6] Douglas Richardson, Plantagenet Ancestry: 2nd Edition, Vol. III, p. 241.
  • [S4] Douglas Richardson, Royal Ancestry, Vol. I, p. 200-201.
  • [S4] Douglas Richardson, Royal Ancestry, Vol. V, p. 74.

I don't have access to all of these referenced pages.... does anyone else have it?

While Plantagenet Ancestry is viewable online (Google Books snippit view), it is not a recommended source for Magna Carta Project profiles (especially not the first edition) - the 2011 Magna Carta Ancestry, being the same focus as the project, is preferred, with Royal Ancestry being checked for updates.

see the WikiTree space pages

I'll look up the RA refs in a sec.

Entry for Hugh de Audley

Douglas Richardson, Royal Ancestry (2013), volume I, pages 200-202 AUDLEY 8.

Entry for James de Audley, Knt., with Hugh de Audley (AUDLEY 8.ii.) listed as son by Ella

If the information is the same as in Plantagenet Ancestry, the sources are probably the same too (even with a magnifying glass, I can barely read the fine print following the entries in RA). The trick with Lewis's database - https://our-royal-titled-noble-and-commoner-ancestors.com/p368.htm#i11041 - is verifying that the information that appears to be attributed to Richardson is actually in Richardson.

That's why I listed only the pertinent references to the parents... I take Richardson's notes and use some or all the sources he drew from as well as others for biographies. I wish I could look them all up but the limitations of free previews are frustrating.

I also searched the soc.nedieval group and didn't find anything relevant at first glance but I did find the le Rous thread I had responded to earlier this year.

Is there some reason we are questioning his parentage? Ela is named as his mother in his IPM.
posted by Joe Cochoit
No, not at all from any of us in the Project... I was just responding to the OP. This profile is a part of another trail from my ancestor Charles Barnes, but not the trail I am currently working on. I will eventually be working with this profile and the references I added to inspect but as of now I am putting a bow on Sir Brian Stapleton for review at the moment.
posted by Darrell Larocque
Joe - The only reason this has come up is because of the original post in this thread with its first sentence in capitals. I have added a link to the IPM after the naming of Ela as Hugh's mother. There will be other use that can be made of IPM information when this profile is improved.

In the Biography naming his father James it should be Newcastle-under-Lyme Staffs not upon Lyme

Thanks, I have made the correction. This profile does not meet Magna Carta Project standards, so will in due course need to be overhauled: on our long todo list! The project has only recently adopted the profile.

Audley-9 and Audley-193 appear to represent the same person because: same person Audley-193 had the wrong last name previously (Audeley). Please use sources from 193.
posted by Doug Lockwood
If the dates are thought to be wrong, then the right ones need to be found, and this needs to be resolved prior to any merge.
posted by Tim Perry
De Audley-73 and Audley-9 are not ready to be merged because: Dates don't match. Looks like a parent or grandparent relationship.
