Biography

Flag of Cambridgeshire (adopted 2015)
Betsey (Booty) Pamenter was born in West Wickham, Cambridgeshire, England.

According to the 1851 census Elizabeth Booty was born around 1811 in West Wickham, Cambridgeshire, England, but she may have been born a few years earlier than that as she appears to have been of full age when she first married in 1829.[1]. She was known as Betsey.

Betsey married George Gilson by banns on February 27, 1829 at St Mary's Church in Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire.[2] Both George and Betsey signed the marriage register.

Together they had the following children:

  1. William Gilson (1830 - )
  2. Frances Gilson (1832 - )
  3. Jemima Jane Gilson (1836–1901)

Betsey was widowed in 1839.

When the 1841 census was taken on June 6, 1841 Betsey was living in Swaffham Prior possibly with her brother-in-law William Gilson. With her are her daughters Frances and Jemima, and also a William Hancock and presumably his son Charles (relationship unknown). Next door is her mother-in-law Anne, and her eldest son William.[3]

  1. John Pamenter (1842 - )
  2. Eliza Pamenter (1848 - )

When the 1851 census was taken on March 30, 1851 Betsey and William and their combined family were in Swaffham Prior.[1]

Research Notes

  • When she marries in 1850 she says her father is "James Gilson, labourer". But her father would have been a Booty. Was her father James Booty?
