Research Notes

Notes from the Norka files: Johann Martin BOTT is found on three Pleve surname charts as spouse to three different women:

  • Anna Katharina Yost
  • Anna Katharina Köhler
  • Katharina Fuchs

Johann Martin's first wife was Anna Katharina Yost and his second wife is Katharina Fuchs, born 10 August 1791 and married on 31 Mar 1845.

However, on the Köhler chart, Johann Martin is entered as second husband of Anna Katharina Köhler (born 10 August 1791) with their marriage date of 31 March 1845 entered on the chart, identical birth dates for both Katharina Fuchs and Anna Katharina Köhler, and Pleve has the marriages as being on the same date.

With the information provided in 1798, 1811, 1834 and 1857 Norka census records, it has been determined that Johann Martin Bott was never married to Anna Katharina Köhler and Pleve made an error in recording the marriage to Anna Katharina Köhler.

Update Johann Martin Bott married Anna Elisabeth Jost/Yost and the couple had eight children. One of those children was Georg Bott. After the death of his wife, Johann Martin Bott remarried to Katharina Fuchs Köhler, the widow of Johannes Köhler. She brought with her into the household daughter Anna Katharina Köhler. This made Georg and Anna Katharina step siblings, not related by blood. Six years later, Georg Bott and Anna Katharina Köhler married. The marriage of step siblings was not unheard of in the Volga German community. Miller-33353 17:56, 25 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello Philip,

Julie is the Norka village coordinator for the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia. She knows as much about Norka and its inhabitants as anyone. The Johannes Bott who was born on 2 Nov 1793 was married to Anna Maria Schmer. Bott-619 and Bott-580 only share the same wife and son because an inexperienced member attached them incorrectly. Kerry

Bott-619 and Bott-580 do not represent the same person because: These two men are brothers born just a year apart.
