Biography

Elizabeth was born about 1853 probably at Uckfield, Sussex, England, or possibly at Dublin, Ireland. She was the daughter of John Diplock and Lucy Diplock.

On the 17th December 1876, Elizabeth Louisa married Frank George Noon at St. Paul, Hammersmith, Middlesex, England. Frank George Noon, 24, bachelor, Engineer of 38 Queen Street, son of George Noon {sic} (Government Clothing Department) and Elizabeth Louisa Diplock, 23, spinster of 38 Queen Street, daughter of John Diplock (Farmer). Witnessed by Joseph Wallis & Elizabeth Wallis[1]

In 1878 Elizabeth was living at 29 Aylesford Street, Pimlico, Middlesex and her husband was recorded as an engineer[2].

In 1879 Elizabeth was living at 50 Pulford Street, Pimlico, Middlesex and her husband was recorded as a Gas Fitter[3]

By 1882, the family had moved to 59 Pulford Street, Pimlico, Middlesex[4]

By 1884, the family had moved to Chelsea, Middlesex, and Elizabeth appears to have gone into the Britten Street Workhouse, probably to give birth to her son Frank George who was born at the workhouse on the 13th February 1884[5]. Elizabeth (31) and Frank George (aged 6 weeks) and were discharged on the 22nd March 1884[6]

Elizabeth (aged 32 years) and son Frank George (aged 2 and a half years) were re-admitted to Britten Street Workhouse, Chelsea, Middlesex on the 19th April 1886[7].

On the 26th April 1889, Elizabeth (using the name Elizabeth Louisa) was living at 17 New Peter Street, Westminster, Middlesex, England[8] and her husband was now occupied as a labourer.

By the 3rd June 1891, the family had moved to 39 Chadwick Street, Westminster, London[9].

In 1895, Elizabeth appears to have put her two daughters Louisa Ann and Margaret Elizabeth into the Fulham Road Workhouse at Westminster, and they were sent to the West London, Ashford, Surrey Poor law school. On the 19th July 1897 Elizabeth entered the workhouse with Louisa and Margaret, and again on the 27th July 1897, and again her two daughters were sent to the West London Poor Law School at Ashford, Surrey, where they remained until they were discharged into service.

She passed away in 1917.

Elizabeth also appears to be at a different address in 1891 with her missing children but with husband recorded as Robert. As the Census was taken on the evening of the 5th April 1891, it is possible they could have been enumerated at two different addresses. No evidence has been found to show these are two different families - No marriage for a Robert Noon to an Elizabeth (Elizabeth Louisa) Diplock

Research Notes

Elizabeth (Julia) was likely the youngest daughter of John & Lucy Diplock, but as her mother died in 1859, Elizabeth was probably sent to live with extended family. Her birth appears to be unregistered and she cannot be found in the 1861 census. She appears to have changed her name to Julia by 1891 (no evidence of her dying and Frank George remarrying to a Julia)

From the baptisms and burial of children Lucy, Florence Charlotte and Maud, the family should have been living in Pulton Street, Pimlico, or in that area in 1881, however, the family are not listed at 50 or 59 Pulton Street in the 1881 census. The piece number for that area is 103 and none of the family can be found in 1881, so they may have not been enumerated.

In 1891, it appears as if they are living at two different addresses, with only 3 of each children, however, with a transient existence, it is possible they may have been enumerated at both locations, There is no evidence of another Noon/Diplock couple and the 1901 & 1911 census seem to support the fact that these were probably the same families.

Elizabeth may not have known exactly when or where she was born if she had been informally adopted, or her actual names, and that would explain the inconsistencies throughout the census. Her children probably had little knowledge of her background, which would explain why her age at death was recorded as 54, when she was probably closer to 64.
