George I was King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1 August 1714 until his death on 11 June 1727, and ruler of the Duchy and Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg (Hanover) in the Holy Roman Empire from 1698 until his death.
In 1727, George intended to visit his homeland for the sixth time. However, on his way there, he suffered a stroke between the Dutch city of Delden and Nordhorn while in a carriage. He was transported to the residence of his brother Ernst August, the castle of Osnabrück, the place of his childhood, where he died on June 11 (Julian calendar) / June 22 (Gregorian calendar), 1727. He was buried in the chapel of the Leineschloss in the city of Hanover.
In the USA, King George County, Virginia is named in his honour, as is Brunswick County, North Carolina.
