Biography

Abraham Kimberly immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Abraham Kimberly born about 1630, probably in or near Wotton-Under-Edge, Gloustershre, England, was the son of Thomas Kimberly and Alice (Awood).[1]

He migrated to Massachusetts with his family about 1635 and subsequently moved to New Haven Colony in 1639.[1]

He married Hannah ____ (perhaps Hannah d/o William and Mary Preston). She married secondly John Curtis, and she died before 21 Oct 1701.[2]

"John Blakeman, Senr. Of Stratford, and Benjamin Hurd of Woodbury, legatees of our late mother Hannah Curtis, deceased, by virtue of marriage with our present wives, the daughters of said Hannah, conveyed 21 Oct. 1701, to brother Abraham Kimberly of Stratford, all right to dwelling house which belonged to our mother."
Att a Generall Court, held ye 27 September, 1670, at ye house of Sam'lDavis, for ye County of Albemarle, in ye Province of Carolina. Laurence Gunsallis, obtained an order against Capt. Jo Outlaw, in May Court, 1670, for a bote of 14 foot, and wheras said Outlaw is departed from his house, and there can be no boat had, Mr. Herman Smewin, and Abrahm Kimberly, were sworn in Court, to appraise ye worth of ye said bote, who vallowed said boat to be worth 750 lbs tobacco, and cost, and cost of sale, wherefore, it is ordered yt said Gunsallis satisfy his debt out of ye said Outlaw's estate, where it can be found.[3]
Att a Generall Court, held for the County of Albemarle, March 20, 1680. Ordered, the commission of administration, be granted to Mr. Joshua Lambe, and Mr. William Therrill, of the estate of Abraham Kimberly, of this couty, deceased, by returning an inventory in six weeks, appraised according to law. [3]

Notes from "The Kimberly Genealogy" Note there is more in this source.[2] They were, however, in "the County of Albemarle in the Province of Charolina", when their four younger children were born. The family returned to Connecticut and resided in Stratford, where Abraham Kimberly, Senior, died before 1680 and his widow married John Curtis.

He died in Albermarle, North Carolina before 27 Mar 1680. [2] (killed By Indians)[4]

  4. According to Moses S. Curtis, Decendants and Ancestor. Abraham was a boat builder and lived in Albemarle County, North Carolina, between 1668 and 1674. Family tradition is that Abraham was killed by Indians in the Carolinas. After he died the family moved back to Connecticut.

They moved to Edenton, Chowan Co, North Carolina abt 1667, where Abraham was probobly in the boat building business. North Carolina Records indicate that in 1670 Abraham was sworn in court at Edenton to set value of a 14' boat stolen by Capt Jo Outlaw. Upon his death in 1680 at Albemarle Co, North Carolina, Abrahams's estate was claimed by creditors. His wife Hannah, moved back to Stratford, Connecticut where her inheritance and that of her children were remained intact. Abraham's father, Thomas, had left nothing but his cloak to Abraham but left the balance of his estate to Abraham's wife Hannah.
