Biography

Joseph Lane, son of Thomas Lane and Elizabeth Unknown was born about 1670 in Surry County, Virginia (1) and he died after 16 May 1730 in Bertie County, North Carolina Colony. He married Julian, last name possibly Jarrell, before 1695 in Surry County, VA (2).

(1) In 1686 Joseph (age 16) is listed along with his father Thomas and brother Thomas in the Surry County Tax records. Tax list compiled by Forrest D King for Magazine of VA Genealogy. Prior to this date, only his father and brother are listed. (1) In 1687 Joseph (age 17) is listed along with his father Thomas and brother Thomas in a Surry County Military Roster. See Colonial Surry by Boddie

(2) He married Julian, last name possibly Jarrell, before 1692 in Virginia. (Julian Jarrell was probably daughter of Thomas Jarrell and Margaret Knight. Julian, was born about 1675 in Surry County, and died date unknown probably in Bertie County, North Carolina.)

On 5 Sep 1710, Joseph and wife Jelion sold 200 acres of land in Surry, Virginia, inherited from his father, to his brother Thomas Lane, Jr, Witness: Thomas Hart, Mary Hart. [1]

The following year, he received a patent for 640 acres on the Roanoke River, North Carolina; land that had been originally granted to William Jones. [2]

Children:

  1. John Lane b. abt 1698, probably in Virginia; d. bef May 1776 in Halifax County
  2. Joseph LANE Jr. b. 1700, probably in Virginia; d. bef Feb 1777, Roanoke River, Halifax Co., NC.
  3. Benjamin LANE b. 1704, probably in Virginia; d. abt 1789 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.
  4. Mary (or Martha) LANE. Married Mathew Howell in 1719.
  5. Thomas Lane b. 1707, d. bef 1778 in Dobbs County, NC

In 1720, all of his sons were also living in the same area and they paid North Carolina taxes: Joseph Sr, Joseph Jr, John, Benjamin and Thomas. [3]

In 1725 Joseph and Juelian sold to Robert House, on ES Hunting Quarter Swamp, between Robert Newson and Joseph Lane, Jr. [4]

In 1727 Joseph Lane, Sr was a vestryman of the North West Parish of North Carolina. [5]

In 1727, Joseph Lane and his wife Julian sold 213 acres of Little Swamp to William Baldwin on 29 Jul 1727. [6]

He was still alive in 16 May 1730 when Joseph Lane, Sr sold 100 acres to William War on Quarter Swamp.[7]

Joseph Lane died sometime after 1738. This is based on a document of animal marks of Edgecombe: John Lane, son of Joseph Lane, JR...John is the grandson of Joseph, Joseph is his son and if Joseph is referred to as Jr, this means that Joseph b. 1669 was still alive (approx age of 69) [8]

Note

Changes in the North Carolina counties: Chowan was established in 1670; a portion became Bertie in 1722; a portion of Bertie became Edgecombe in 1741, and finally Halifax was formed in 1758 from a portion of Edgecombe county.

Joseph Lane (1669-aft 1730) was the youngest son of Thomas Lane and Elizabeth Shepherd in Surry County, VA. His birthdate is estimated as he is in the Surry Militia roster of 1687. He would have to be at least 18 to serve. (1) He married Julian (possibly Jarrell) before 1698 and they are the parents of Mary Lane Howell, John Lane, Joseph Lane, Benjamin Lane & Thomas Lane. in 1714 he and Thomas Garrell (prob Jarrell) patented 1400 ac of Isle of Wight (2).

Before 1721 he, his wife and his sons moved to the Chowan Precinct, Albemarle, North Carolina. (3).

Between 1711 and 1730, he bought and sold property in the Roanoke area of North Carolina. (4) As no further activity is found past 1730, it is likely that he died about this time.

1727 He is mentioned as a Vestryman of the North West Parish of Bertie in NC (5)

The final deed of Joseph Lane is 16 May 1730 when Joseph Lane, Sr sold 100 ac of Quarter Swamp to William War. (6)

Joseph Lane was born in 1665 in Jamestown, Virginia. Died in 1743 in either Edgecomb or Halifax, North Carolina, USA

His mother is listed in our family records as Elizabeth Spencer Sheppard Jones born in 1639 in Long Bennington, Lincolnshire, England. Died 03 Sep 1666 however location is in question. Some notes say Long Bennington, Lincolnshire, England while others say it was in Virginia, USA.

Father is listed in our family records as Thomas Lane born 25 Oct 1630 in Bennington. Lincolnshire, England. Died 06 Jan 1708 in Surry County. Virginia, USA

A question has come up regarding a special mark made on the grantor deeds of the Lane family of Bertie/Edgecombe /Halifax counties. I have reviewed 19 deeds made by one of the following: John & Mary Lane, Joseph &Patience Lane, Benjamin Lane or Thomas & Elizabbeth Lane from 1723 to 1735. All of these brothers and sometimes their wives added a special mark, sort of looking like a letter for their given name. So this was a common practice for this generation. The father Joseph Lane b. 1670 and the next generaton of these brothers do not have such a mark on their grantor deeds.

If anyone wants to look at the actual deeds, please contact me. Thanks

I’d like to see the deeds you’re referring to. Sorry for the long delay in responding.

Lane-12439 and Lane-12436 appear to represent the same person because: Appears to have been accidentally created along with duplicate wives

A patrilineal descendant of Dumas Lane matches the Y-DNA of a patrilineal descendant of Joel Lane and two descendants of Jesse Lane (the latter whom are not on WikiTree.) These matches are shown in Group 6 of the Lane y-DNA project. I suggest that all participants in the Lane y-DNA project add their lineage and data to WikiTree.

I would suggest that he lived until 16 May 1730 when Joseph Lane, Sr sold 100 ac on Quarter Swamp to William War (See Bertie Deed BK C, 264). This would have to be the Joseph m. to Julian as his son Joseph would have be called Jr and Joseph , the son of Joseph and Patience was not even born (abt 1733).

Yes, you are right. The siblings listed in the will are not his either.

As pointed on page for Benjamin Lane (Lane-5754) from Southside VA Families, vol 2 p. 294 by John Bennett Boddie, Joseph Lane (Lane-228) died without a will. The will dated 1757 is for the son of Benjamin Lane, Joseph Lane, who probably born about 1725 and died prior to Nov 1758.

I have not been able to find a will for Joseph Lane who probably died after 1730 in Bertie County. Based on land records from 1719 on, I find four Lane men, who probably were sons of Joseph Lane and Julian and were brothers. They all bought property in Chowan or/ and Bertie County: John Lane, Joseph Lane, jr, Benjamin Lane and Thomas Lane.

According to NC Taxpayers, 1701-1786 (listed online) father Joseph Lane, son Joseph Lane, John Lane, Benjamin Lane, Thomas Lane all paid property taxes in 1720 or 1721 in either Chowan County or Roanoke River County of North Carolina.

Joseph Lane and wife "Jelion" sold 200 ac of land in Surry County, inherited from Joseph's father to his brother Thomas Lane on 5 Sep 1710. Wit: Thomas Hart, Mary Hart from Surry Co DB 5, p. 37. This gives an approx date when Joseph, wife and probably his sons moved to Bertie County, North Carolina.
