Biography

Lydia (Masters) Taber immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Lydia (Masters) Taber is related to US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Here is the trail.
Lydia Masters
Birth: 1605 • West Hatch, Somerset, England[1]
Death: 11 Dec 1669 • Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts
Father: John Masters (1580–1639)
Mother: Jane UNKNOWN
Lydia Masters was born "say" 1615[2], the daughter of John Masters and Jane (Unknown), "of Watertown."[3]
Lydia's birth location (as well as the origins of her parents) has yet to be confirmed. Lydia immigrated (possibly on the Arabella) with her parents.
Lydia Masters married by 1639 to Philip Tabor/Taber (Lydia married by 19 Dec 1639, when Lydia's father names her "Lydia Taber" in his will).[3]
Philip Tabor (aka Taber), origins unknown, born about 1605 based on his claim in a deposition that he was 64 in 1669, emigrated by 1633, settling initially in Watertown (where he was admitted to the church before 14 May 1634 when made freeman), removed to Yarmouth in 1638, then Martha's Vineyard, then New London, then Portsmouth in 1656, and finally Providence, Rhode Island.
Lydia and Philip had the following children:
  1. John Taber[4] bp Barnstable 8 Nov 1640; living 21 Oct 1684
  2. Philip Taber[5] b abt 1642; m by 1668 Mary Cooke
  3. Thomas Taber[6] b abt 1644; m1 by 1668 Esther Cooke; m2 by 1673 Mary Tomson.
  4. Joseph[7] b abt 1646; living 1669
  5. Lydia Taber[8] b abt 1648; m1 Providence 16 Apr 1664 Pardon Tillinghast (support is lacking); m2 in Providence 4 Nov 1718 Samuel Mason of Swansea
Lydia died sometime after her last child was born in 1648 and before about 1669 when Philip married again. Philip died after 24 Feb 1671/2 and before 27 Apr 1682 when his second wife was called widow. Many sources claim he died in Tiverton, but he apparently died before Tiverton was settled. (Some descendants did reside there.)

Research Notes

Disputed child: R. C. Anderson in "The Great Migration Begins" says there was no daughter named Esther (Taber) Mayhew who married a Mayhew, so she is being detached. There are many internet errors because of a Taber Genealogy Book by George L. Randall, therefore this profile is being protected by the Puritan Great Migration Project.
