Biography

Timothy Nash immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
This profile is part of the Nash Name Study.

Timothy Nash, son of Thomas and Margery (Baker) Nash, was baptized on 15 February 1617/8 (the same day as his brother Joseph) at Ribbesford, Worcestershire,[1] Since his father was described as "of Bewdley"[2] and the church in Ribbesford at the time served both Ribbesford and Bewdley,[3] it is perhaps most likely that Joseph was born in Bewdley.

Excerpted from the chapter on Lieut. Timothy Nash in The Nash Family:[4]

Timothy Nash was the youngest child of immigrant Thomas Nash. He was born in 1626 in England or Leyden, Holland.
His first mention in New England is a 1645 New Haven court fine: "Brother Thomas Nash, for his son's absence at a generall trayning, pleaded his necessity of business in fetching home his hay by watter". Timothy took the freeman's oath in 1654, and married Rebecca Stone about 1657[5] in New Haven. She was the daughter of Rev. Samuel Stone[5] of Hartford. Timothy and Rebecca remained in New Haven to care for Thomas until he died. They had two children there. The last mention of Timothy in New Haven is another fine for absence from a town meeting, in 1660.
Timothy and his growing family then moved to Hartford, where Rebecca's father was a minister, for about three years. After Rev Stone died in 1663, they moved farther up the Connecticut River to Hadley, Massachusetts, where they finally settled. It appears that Timothy was both a blacksmith and a gunsmith, and he may have been recruited to the new settlement because of those combined skills. They remained in Hadley for the rest of their lives.
Timothy died at Hadley on 13 March, 1698/99. Rebecca lived for ten more years. Their children were:
  1. Rebekah, born 12 March, 1657-8 at New Haven; died young, probably at New Haven.
  2. Samuel, born 3 February 1659-60 at New Haven; died at Hadley, 1668.
  3. Thomas, birth about 1661 at Hartford; settled in Hatfield.
  4. Joseph, born 27 January 1663-4 at Hadley; died unmarried 28 March, 1740.
  5. Timothy, born about 1665 at Hadley; died childless.
  6. John, born 21 August, 1667 at Hadley; settled in Hadley.
  7. Samuel 2, born 17 June, 1669 at Hadley; died unmarried 3 May, 1738.
  8. Hope, born 26 Nov. 1670 at Hadley; married Isaac Warner.
  9. Ebenezer, born 25 Oct. 1673 at Hadley; settled in Suffield, Connecticut.
  10. Daniel, birth about 1676, at Hadley; settled in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
  11. Ephraim, birth about 1682, at Hadley; settled in Granby, Massachusetts.
  12. Mary, birth not recorded, probably at Hadley; died 19 December 1687.
