Biography
Robert was born in 1840. He was the son of Robert Newth and Edith Ogbourne. New Zealand Emigration Register [1] has 29 year old Robert (brickmaker) and 31 year old wife Edeth, three sons and one daughter travellling on the ship Will Watch to New Zealand from Gravesend in 1841. They were recommended by C Gilbert who paid for the wife's passage.
He married Charlotte Harriett Newton in 1861 [2] He passed away in 1928 age 88.[3] His Probate states he was a bricklayer residing in Palmerston North who died 29 June 1928 intestate [4]
MR ROBERT HUGHBURN NEWTH. The death occurred yesterday, at the age of 88 years, of an old and highly respected citizen of Palmerston North, Mr Robert Hughburn Newth.' Born in Wiltshire, Mr Newth came to New Zealand as an infant in 1840, his parents landing in Nelson. Some 58 years ago ho came to the Manawatu district and, after living for a while at Ashhurst, settled in Palmerston North when the town was but a village. Of cheerful disposition, Mr Newth took a keen interest in sport and politics and his passing will be regretted by his friends. He is survived by four sons and three daughters. —Messrs George, Fred, Robert and Warren Newth, Mesdames Harvey (Auckland), Johnston (Mangaweka) and Beauchamp (Hawera). His wife predeceased him two years ago. [5]
