Biography

John was the eldest son of Jean Maxwell and Gabriel Porterfield. He passed away in 1653. He died without children and was was succeeded by his brother Alexander.^[1][2]

From James Patterson:

"John was a youth of great promise. He was a Captain in the Scotch army when Cromwell was in Scotland for which his estate was sequestrated. He was a person of good courage and magnanimity and of a good presence. He was to have been married to a daughter of the Laird of Corshill and to have got 10,000 merks of tocher but he fell sick when the marriage was to have been solemnized and died much lamented."^[2]
