Biography

Gabriel was the 5th of 7 children of Alexander Porterfield and Agnes Houston. He died in 1648.[1]

Irish connections

In 1632 Gabriel and his second wife Jean Maxwell acquired lands in Ireland from John Cunningham. The lands, known as Ardrie were in the Barony of Raphoe. No other records have been uncovered that would indicate if Gabriel or his children actually lived on this property.[2][3]

Multiple Porterfield family groups immigrated to America and Canada. No connection to this Gabriel Porterfield in America has been established.

Lands in Scotland

In addition to the lands of Hapland, Gabriel and Jean acquired "a conjunct liferent of 'Halketh' and its loch on a charter of Robert Montgomerie of Hessilhead, dated 24 May 1634.[4]

From The Porterfields (1947):

Gabriel Porterfield purchased the lands of Hapland, by which he was known,: from Patrick Cunningham in 1612; who purchased the lands of Crawfield from David Dickson in 1633; who purchased the lands of Temple Ryburn from Neil Ryburn in 1638; and later a part of the lands of Laidlaw. Although valuable lands had been acquired, debts had been assumed, which had fastened a cloud over the title of the several properties, then composing Hapland and which would become palpably visible many years later.[5]

Family

Gabriel was married three times. His wives, all from prominent families in the area, were Marion Crawford of Lochmoris, Jean Maxwell of Dargavel, and Jean Douglas of Murieston.[1][5][6]

Gabriel and Marion Crawford were married in 1618. They had the following issue:

Gabriel and Jean Maxwell were married around 1624. Jean was sister of John Dargavel. They had the following issue:

Gabriel and Jean Douglas had the following issue:

  • William, entered the army, went abroad and never returned. The earlier William died at a young age[5][6]
  • Mary, married Mr. Fullarton, a merchant in Irvine[5][6]
  • Isobel, died unmarried[5][6]
