John Porterfield's parents and date of birth are unknown. He was an adult in 1620 so he would seem to have been born in the latter part of the 16th century. It is reasonable that he could be related to the Porterfields of Duchall and Porterfield of Scotland.
John was a merchant, burgess in Edinburgh.[1]
John was married to Elizabeth Cant. John lived in Holland and in 1620 was made Master of the Conciergery. He died in 1621 at which time his wife took over as Mistress of the Conciergery.[2]
After the death of wife Elizabeth in 1643 her sons, John and Walter, and daughter Margaret's husband Patrick Drummond caused a stone to be erected in the church with the arms of both Elizabeth and her deceased husband, John. There was a large dispute with this with matter being taken to General Assembly and threats being made. After much ado, the stone was erected and eventually was removed.[2] [3]
John and Elizabeth had two sons and one daughter:
