Peter John Purves was born on the 10th February 1939, in New Longton (near Preston), Lancashire, England, the son of John Kenneth Purves, a tailor, and his wife Florence Patton.[1]
Peter trained at the Alsager College of Education, with the aim of becoming a teacher, but began to act in Repertory theatre instead.
Later (1965 and on) he became known as Steven Taylor, a Companion of William Hartnell's Doctor Who, a role he continued in audio productions. He had made an earlier appearance in the show as "Morton Dill", in the episode The Chase.
His 11-year stint as a presenter of the show Blue Peter is the second-longest, behind that of John Noakes's 12 years 6-months.
Peter has been married twice, the first ending in divorce after 20 years. He has been married to his second spouse since 1982. He has two children - his son Matthew also being notable in the industry as an assistant director and production manager (best known for Silent Witness (1996), Beck (1996) and EastEnders (1985)).
Peter is still living.
