Biography

Janetta Genethy Ramey was born around 1843[1] to Andrew Raney & Margaret Peggy- it is believed her siblings are:

In 1850[2]

Janetta's first husband was James Cook, and they married on the 15th of October 1856 in Franklin, Arkansas.[3]

  1. William Cook Rogers (1857-1903)[4][5][6]
  2. Janette Anna Rodgers/Cook (1862-1946)[4][5][6]

As Janetta was married under her maiden name to Jesse, there is a good chance her marriage to James was dissolved and he did not die by the time she remarried Jessee. Janetta then married Jesse Rogers in Arkansas, County Marriages Index, 1837-1957 on the 2nd of July 1862 in Johnson, Arkansas [7]:

  1. Green Rogers (1863-?)[4][5]
  2. James Bud (1865-1933)[4]
  3. Charles Rogers (1869-?)[4]

What's interesting is that Jenetta married under her maiden name both times.

  1. Unknown child likely Rogers
  2. Unknown child likely Rogers

We know one of the named children died before 1900, which would probably be Green or Charles. We now potentially have an issue with the births of the youngest three children, as they are listed born in 1881 and Jessee appears to have died in Oct of 1877 at the latest

  1. Quincy Rogers(1881-1904) Twin of Tince[8]
  2. Tince Finis Rogers (1881-1906) Twin of Quincy[8]
  3. Ed Rogers (1882-?)[8]

In 1860[6] she find her living with her parents in Franklin County, Arkansas.

In 1865[5] We find the family in Neosho, Coffey, Kansas. Jesse 34, Janette 23, William 6, AA 4, Greenbury 2. Jesse is a farmer with a value of about $230.00

In 1870[4] they are living in lower Franklin, Arkansas. Jesse is a farmer with a personal estate valued at $1,500.

Jesse died by October of 1877, and his probate records, finally found after many years tell that it was anything but simple[9], The Estate is mentioned in Volume C page 172, 244 , 366, 419, 441, 450. This is followed by Volume D on pages 7, 64, 110, 154, 224, 263.

The first record is identified date Jan 31, 1878 in what appeaers to be a petition to reinstate the estate of J.J. Rogers[10]. Janetta was petitioning to have her bond as the executrix to the estate reinstated. In the peition she states that in November of 1877 she had been appointed as the executrix of the estate of Jessie Rogers as prinicpal and that William and Frank Raney had been named as securities in the amount of $1,100. That she had filed the inventory and appraisment within sixty days as directed and unable to file a copy of the same as they were destroyed. The estate had been valued at $550 and that $250 of cotton belonged to the estate which she was ordered to sell. She further said that the report had been approved by the court as a full report of proceedings up to the 19th of October 1877 and there had been no changes.

The inventory, bond, and appraisal had been destroyed by a fire on the 19th of October 1877, her brother in law Moses Burt was acting as an agent for her.

We next find record of the probate on the 19th of April, 1878[11] in which it appears that Janetta was reisntated as the administrator, and to go forward as if the same had never been destroyed.

There appears to be a gap again (perhaps unidentified records still to be identified and we see next on 21 Jan, 1879[12], they were hoping to have the creditors of the estate to file their claims properly to authenticate them, and that they had been paid. She stated she was ignorant of her duties onthe premises at the time she paid the said claims after hearing she needed to, and the court appears to have required the count to authenticate them by the 10th oday of February 1879.

L.C Shrew stated he was owed $15 based on a note, ocurt awared it with interet from that date at 6% per centum per annum.

Feb 10th of 1879 we again find note for the estate[13], in which case the court provided until the April term of 1879 to file her settlement with said estate.

The April 22nd, 1879 term is next mentioned[14] in which Janetta presented to the court a claim against the estate for $275 asking to be allowed to use said claim as a credit in next settlment with said estate. The claim was disallowed for the reason that said administrator asked credit for certain sums of money paid to person who had not yet probated their claims agains said estate.

The next day on the 23rd of April, 1879[15] in which janetta Rogers againt filed a motion for a new trial of her claim against the estate, which said motion is by the court overruled

There appears to be a break again and we find the next records in October 28, 1879. The court ordered that the clerk of the court issue an attachment for Jannetta Rogers to be returnable on the first day of the January 1880 term of the court to answer for a contempt of court in obeying the lawful order of said court and for her failure to file her annual settlment as required as the administator of Jesse's estate.

It appears that this was actioned on the 22nd of January, 1880[16]. The court ordered that janetta was to appear in court the first day of the April 1880 term to answer for contempt of court in not filing her settlment of the estate. Further she was to pay a bail in the amount of $100 to the sheriff of Logan County.

The court then furthe ordered that Janetta Rogers pay the remainder of T.J. Rankin's claim against the estate, he had filed in January of 1879 for the amount of his claims for $30 and $37.50 in the fifth class of claims. The Judgement of allowance of $19.50, and since no claims in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th remaining unapid

On the 22nd of April, 1880 the court then actioned the estate[17], and Janetta petetioned again for the court for the amount of $265 against the estate, the claim was properily verified, and allowed the claim. Shortly after and it was laid over again.

On the 23rd of october, 1880[18] and they found that the account current and file din the court in the April 1880 term

On the 21st of January, 1881[19] the court found the account current for final settlment

20th of April, 1881[20] and that the sum of the assets was $25.

Janetta would be involved in several land transfers.

A date of filing of June 20, 1883 for date of instrument of April 21, 1883, A W Deed, recorded in Deed Book H pages 117 and 118 - S 1/2 SW 1/4 Sec 20 & NE of NW Sec 29 T 8 R 25 W [21] from William Raney(Rainey) to Janetta(Jennette) Rogers. The Deed can be found at Union and Shelah Road near Paris, Arkansas[22], William transferred the land her his daughter for the sum of $1, given he died in November of 1883, he was likely ill. The land contained 120 acres and was described as:

The South half of S 1/2 of the south West Quarter (SW 1/4) of Section Twenty (20) and the North East Quarter of the North West Quarter (N E 1/4 of NW 1/4) of Section 29, all in the Township No. Eight (8) North Range No Twenty Five (25) West and contained one hundred and twenty (120) acres of land.

Land given by William Raney to Janetta Rogers

In December of 1884 she would start the process of filing for a homestead grant appliation #17793 at the North West of the North West Quarter of Sec 29 Tonwship 8-U Range 25 W containing 40 acres. This may have been a smaller allotment, for if she already owned the 120 acres from her father, she could only have up to 160. This land also appears directly adjacent to her fathers land in the above image[23].

On March 18, 1891 she would be given the final Homestead Certificate #5796[23]. Her daughter in law Millie Lee Roger's father, William R Lee, would serve as a witness, her son JB Rogers also served as a witness. The wintesses confirmed she had resided in the same homestead area since 1882 and was a single widow, and had only been absent to to go to the post office, market and visit neighbors.

Fourty acres of the original homestead(the 120 granted by her father) and 15 acres of this land had been cultivated the last six seasons. The home had a double plant residence with 1 plank house with 2 rooms, and a stable and crib; accompanied by a dug well, small orchard of about 55 acres. This was worth about $600.

She confirmed she was born and raised on the same land as the original homestead of her father, which adjoined this application, and that there was a barn and one dwelling that is a double log plank house with hall between and porch on the east side. & one plank house with 2 rooms. She confirmed that she was a widow with 5 children who never remarried

A date of filing of Oct 20, 1891 for an instrument completed on the 20th of October 1891 of a Deed from Jennette Rogers to Joseph Staerett Jr(spelling?) Book N, Page 9 - N W 1/4 NW 1/4 Sec 29 T 8 N R 25 W (appears that this may be part of the land William Transferred to her in 1883[24], her brother Frank later transfers land in October of 1891 as well

On Oct 22, 1892 a filing would be made for a transaction completed on October 20, 1892 for a deed in Book V page 313 - NE 1/4 NW 1/4 Sec 29 T 8 NR 25 W[25]

Then on October 26, 1892 a filing would be made for a transfer done on March 1, 1886 of a Deed in Book V Page 335 S 1/2 SW 1/4 Sec 20 T 8 NR 25 W[26]

Then lastly we seem to find a filing completed on April 2nd, 1895 for a transaction on 12 Oct 1892 of a Deed filed in Book T Page 496 NE 1/4 of NW 1/4 Sec 29 TP 8 NR 25 W 40 A[27]

There may be other land transactions in addition to these, this is not a full search, but currently a work in progress.

In 1900[8]

She would stay in contact with Quincy after his incarceration, however she did not want his body brought home to Wynnewood.

She passed as on the 21st of April 1906 in Wynnewood, Garvin, Oklahoma, United States and would be buried in the Oaklawn Cemetery [28].

Her son Quincy murdered her son William

Article from early 1900's Wynnewood [29]

Mrs. Jennetta Rogers and four sons, William, the murdered man, Quincy, Tince and Edward . Quency, it seems, was the head of the family and has borne a good reputation heretofore. William was his senior by about 8 years.

Before day Monday morning Quincy got up and build the fires and retired from the room, soon the mother, who is growing very old, went to the kitchen to get breakfast. Quincy then went to the tent of one, Nelson, who lives near by, borrowed an axe, returned to the room where his brother slept and dealt him two blows on the head which crushed the skull and death resulted in a very brief time.

Then he left the premises and went to his brother's J.B. Rogers, a distance of about one and one-half miles and told him what he had.done. J.B. Rodgers hasten to the scene, and meeting C.T. Thompson , had him go and take charge of Quincy, who brought him to town.

It was a very sad affair and deeply regretted by their friends and neigbors.

The murderer gave no reason for committing the act, but stated he was justifyable. As the matter thus stands, the causes leading up to it are mysterious, but it is a cold blooded affair as the victim was asleep at the time the blow was dealt, as was Ed, another brother who was sleeping with the murdered man.

There are many and varied opinions concerning this as all other murders, but we will await the development of acts by the court. and not attempt to shield or defend.

The preliminary trial was held at Pauls Valley before Commissioner Pfeiffer of the United States court, Wednesday and the defendant was bound over to await the action of the grand jury, and committed to the jail at Ardmore in default of a bond.

Notes

  1. Her first name has been seen spelled many way, Looking to the probate for Jessee and Homestead record it is shown as Janetta, so recording that as her given name.
