Biography

Secure evidence for Jane's parentage has not yet been found. Douglas Richardson says she was a daughter of Richard ap Ieuan, of Collenna, and Catherine (or Catrin) Basset[1][2] but he is relying on old, fairly weak sources.[3][4] Her exact date of birth is unknown, but guesstimated to have been about 1625. (See Research Notes) She had five brothers and two sisters,[3][1] and was likely born in the parish of Llantrisant, Glamorganshire, where her suggested parents lived.[5] Another source is a compilation of Welsh pedigrees made in the first half of the 19th century (MS 11964 held by the National Library of Wales), and this is not sufficient to give secure sourcing. Old pedigrees like these often contain significant errors. Some of the issues were discussed in 2012 in soc.genealogy.medieval.[6]

She married, by 1645 or earlier (as their eldest son was born c.1646) John ab Evan, son and heir of John ap Ieuan of Treverigg and Elizabeth Richards.[3][2][7][8] At least five children have been suggested from this marriage but, as for Jane's own parentage, some of the sourcing is not strong:

  • John Bevan; born c. 1646[5]; married 1665 Barbara Aubrey;[5][9] died c.1726[10][11]
  • Charles Bevan; married Florence ferch Morgan (daughter of his cousin Morgan ab Evan, of Gelligaled, and Mary (eldest daughter of Richard ab Evan, of Collenna)[11][12]
  • Evan Bevan[13]
  • (Unknown) son (possibly named Richard) Bevan[13]
  • (Unknown) daughter Bevan[5]

The date of Jane's death is unknown. However, both she and her husband were said to have "died when [their] eldest son [John] was very young...leaving five children, of whom [their] son John was the eldest."[5] As son John was born c. 1646, the youngest child could have been born no earlier than 1650 (and possibly several years later than that). This would make Jane's death likely to have been anywhere from 1650 to c.1656 (assuming "very young" meant her eldest son was no older than ten years of age). This is a very tentative guesstimate, as Glenn's statement that Jane and her husband died when their children were all very young is unsourced. It is likely she died in Llantrisant, where her children were born.

Research Notes

Jane's parents: Richard ap Ieuan and Catherine Basset were not originally thought to have been Jane's parents, likely because Bartrum listed only one daughter (Mary) for Catherine Basset. Bartrum's work, however, has since been proven to contain many inaccuracies. Its previous website has been taken down, but may now be accessed through Aberystwyth University here. A discussion of this line on soc-gen-medieval (August 2012) can be found here. The Limbus Patrum Morganiae et Glamorganiæ lists all eight of Richard and Catherine's children, including "Jane, [who] m. Evan John of Trevereig."[3] Richardson also places Jane in this family, citing both Limbus Patrum Morganiae and Merion in the Welsh Tract.[8] The sourcing is, though, not very strong, and her parentage should be regarded as uncertain until firmer evidence is found.
Birth: Jane's date of birth was originally estimated (on this profile) to have been c.1610, based on Richardson's statement that her husband was under age when his father died in 1630, which indicates John's birthdate was sometime after 1609. It could have been considerably later than 1609 however. The current estimate of Jane's birthdate likely being c.1625 is based on her being about 21 years of age when her eldest son John was born in 1646.[14]
Date of Marriage: Richardson erroneously gives the date of Jane's marriage to Ieuan ap John (aka John Evans) as 1664.[7] That date is actually when their son John married Barbara Aubrey.[15]

Richard-3435 and Richards-1010 appear to represent the same person because: as the existing profile is part of a Magna Carta Trail....I suggest that we do the merge, as these are clearly intended to be the same person, it is the naming conventions that are in question.

Thanks, Robin. I agree and have completed the merge. The two profiles for her husband will need to be merged. But some research may be needed first.

I have now look a little further, and merged the two profiles for her husband. This was made much easier by helpful research notes written by Jack Day on one of the profiles for the husband, which I have carried over into the merged profile.

this profile and that of Richard-3435 appear to be using the same information but are married to (apparently) different men with different children: Charles (attached as son of Richard-3435) settled in Maryland; Charles, son of Richards-1010 immigrated to Pennsylvania with his brother John Bevan. Richardson's information in both Royal Ancestry and Magna Carta Ancestry (BEVAN) supports Richards-1010 as mother of the Pennsylvania immigrants.

Jane Richards, married about 1664 Ieuan AP John, son and heir of John ap Ieuan, by Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Richards. Ieuan AP John died before 1665.

Thank you!

and an update ... looks like the 1664 marriage year was for the son (born 1646). I've changed Jane's birth year based on further research so we can go ahead and merge this profile & Richards-1010 (although if you do have sources, please post them).

Thanks! Liz

Research indicates that the 1664 marriage date is from a TAG article cited by Richardson in Magna Carta Ancestry & that the TAG article cites Clark, which doesn't include a date. Glenn (also cited by Richardson) gives information that allows a marriage date calculation of about 1664 for John Bevan - son of Jane Richards and Ieuan ap John. See this G2G discussion. Glenn also says John Bevan was 80 when he died (with will proved 1726).

Therefore, I intend to remove 1664 as the marriage date for Jane Richards and Ieuan ap John & also change Jane's birth year (again) - this time to "about 1615", which is more reasonable considering her son's birth year of 1646.

Richard-3190 and Richards-1010 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be intended as profiles for the same woman, mother of John Bevan (which is being questioned - see Bevan-62#Research_Notes).

I protected Richards-1010 so that Richard-3190 will be merged into it. The patronymic "ferch Richard" would be the LNAB (not just Richard). If you have a source to indicate that she was born/christened as daughter of Richard instead of using the surname Richards, please postpone the merge (set to unmerged match) and add your source to the profile. Likewise, if you disagree with the c1645 birth year (see Research Notes on Richards-1010) please postpone the merge & add your sources. If you have a source for her death in 1710, please also add that (1660 was given for Richards-1010, but that's before her 1664 marriage).

Thanks!

do you have sources for her dates? See Richards-1010#Research_Notes for issues with her birth year/marriage in 1664 with son born 1646.

Thanks!

p.s.

The dates of this line are in question - off by about a generation from the Gateway Ancestor John Bevan (Bevan-62), whose 1725 will was said to be proved (1726) when he was 80 - placing his birth at 1646. His wife Barbara Aubrey was born 1637. His parents were married 1664.
