Flag of New France

Jeanne Rousselière was born about 1636 in Moëze, Saintonge, France, daughter of Louis Rousselière and Isabelle (Paris) Parisé. [1]

The 1666 census gives her 30 years of age, that of 1686 gives her 60, and that of 1693, 56.[2]

Arrival in New France:
Arrived in 1653 in Montréal, Jeanne being part of la Grande Recrue de 1653 for Montréal. She is counted among the Filles à marier, girls and women who arrived before the Filles du roy, by the efforts of various agencies, the greatest difference between them being that they received nothing from the king.

Marriage:

Jeanne (17) married Pierre (Godin) Godin dit Châtillon (24) (born about 17 May 1630 in Châtillon-sur-Seine, Bourgogne, France; son of Claude Godin and Marie Bardin) on 13 Oct 1654 in Paroisse Notre-Dame, Montréal, Canada, Nouvelle-France, in the presence of Lambert Closse, Pierre Gadois and Urbain Tessier, the missionnary Claude Pijart celebrating.[3][4].They had done a marriage contract before Lambert Closse on 27 September 1654 in Montréal.[5][1]

Their known children were:

  1. Laurent (Godin) Godin dit Châtillon (1655–1737) .
  2. Marie Gaudin (1657–1687) .
  3. Catherine Godin (1659–1746) .
  4. Gabriel Godin (abt. 1661–bef. 1730) .
  5. Madeleine Godin (1664– ) .
  6. Madeleine Marie Godin (1665–aft. 1719) .
  7. Pierre (Gaudin) Godin (1667–1739) .
  8. Jean Gaudin (1669– ) .
  9. Anne (Gaudin) Gaudin dite Châtillon (1672–1742)

1666 Census: NOTRE-DAME-DES-ANGES, LA RIVIÈRE SAINT-CHARLES ET CHARLESBOURG
Pierre Gaudin dit Chatillon, 34, habitant, carpenter ; Jeanne Roussillet , 30, his wife ; Laurent, 11 ; Marie, 9 , Catherine, 7 ; Gabriel, 5 ; Marie-Magdelaine, 1.[6]

The family moved to Port-Royal in Acadie between 7 June 1676 and 11 June 1677.[2]

In 1686, at Port Royal, Jeanne ROUSSILIERE [sic], aged 50, widow of Godin dit Châtillon, was living with her children: Gabriel, aged 25, Pierre, aged 20, and Anne, aged 13.[7][8]

Jeanne (49) married Pierre Martin (53) (born on 5 Oct 1632 in Bourgueil, Anjou, France; son of Pierre Martin and Marie Catherine Vigneau) around 1686 in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France.

On the 1693 census of Acadie, Jeanne Rousselière, 56, was found in Port-Royal, remarried with Pierre Martin, 57, with Pierre their son, 32 (Pierre Martin), Anne Godin his wife, 21, and the children of the young couple, Cécile, 6, Renée, 5, Madgeleine, 4, and Estienne, 2.[9][10] The arrangement must have been successful as the two families continued living together as shown in the 1700 census. [11] Pierre and Jeanne were also in the 1701 census with no other family members in their household.[12] though his son and his wife Anne Godin were listed separately after Pierre and Jeanne, all still in Port Royal.

The couple continued to reside in Port-Royal and were recorded in the censuses of 1703, [13] 1710, [14] and 1714. [15] [1]

Death
Her date of death is unknown. She remained in Acadie, for which records are only partial.

Research Notes

Some sources state she was cousin of Marie Faucon who came to New France later as a Fille du Roy. No connection between the two has yet been established, Jeanne's husband Pierre Gaudin was present and signed at the marriage, he was also present at the marriage contract, listed as son cousin à cause de Jeanne Rousselière, sa femme ; her cousin because of Jeanne Rousselière, his wife.[19] More than likely they were second cousins or else Jeanne was cousin to one of Marie's parents.

Roussellier-2 and Rousselière-14 appear to represent the same person because: same woman, father, Rousselier is form used by various authors, goes by Rousselière in New France. (profile just adopted for merging)

ok, 1686 Acadian Census microfilm, the actual image is image 26, definitely shows her as widow. Should be linked to profile if not done already.

On the big census grouping one, take a look at page 126 at bottom, Pierre Martin, wife Anne Godin. Year 1698.

pg 77 on this shows 1693 census, Pierre Martin 57, Jeanne Rouselière 56 sa fem, Pierre leur fils, 32; Anne Godin sa f, 21; then 4 much younger children.

Big outpoint with this, would appear those 4 children are actually the children of the younger couple. Jeanne at 56 isn't likely to have had a 2 year old child.

so, based on this, seems she did remarry, and her daughter Anne Godin married her 2nd husband's son to boot.

The 1686 Census is here:

Tim Hebert; Transcription of the 1686 Acadian Census, at Port-Royal, Acadie 1686 Census Transcribed.

The original census can be found at Acadian Census microfilm C-2572 of the National Archives of Canada “Acadie Recensements 1671 – 1752”, Images 15-60.

Perhaps he married or started cohabitating with Jeanne R that year, but the 1693 Census that lists her does not say wife but often does not say for others either.

the link with Pierre martin appears to come from an Acadian census, I think we need to see what it says to determine if she was remarried or if Pierre Martin is simply living there. Usually censuses dit say marital relationship.

ok found marriage record of Pierre Godin's son Pierre in 1689, where Pierre Godin the father is clearly marked deceased. (in Drouin collection) So he's not the one who died in 1700. There is more than one man named Pierre Godin in the colony at the same time.

but according toFichier Origine Pierre Godin died before 1686 census in Acadie, has anyone got access to that? https://www.fichierorigine.com/recherche?numero=241830

per http://www.migrations.fr/FILLE_A_MARIER/FILLEAMARIER.htm#R Pierre Godin moved to Acadie around 1676-77. Have you got a copy of that census available somewhere? Might be that somebody wrote Martin instead of Godin?

I was just looking at the family next generation down and recall seeing a name like hers with Pierre Martin. Might be the reason for this spouse, though not entirely sure it's the same Jeanne. Pierre MARTIN 57, Jeanne ROUSELIER 56, Pierre 32, Anne GODIN (his wife) 21, Cecile 6, Renee 5, Madeleine 4, Estienne 2; 10 cattle, 8 sheep, 10 pigs, 12 arpents, 1 gun

This is on the 1693 Acadian Census and I think I saw her on a couple of censuses after that.

Per review of PRDH and Gagné's Before the King's Daughters, there does not appear to be evidence of a second marriage to a Pierre Martin.

Is there a source for the marriage with Pierre Martin? I can't find one either on her profile or Pierre's.

Thank you!
