Cornelius Russ was born on February 26, 1844, in Richmond, North Carolina, United States, son of Stephen Russ (1810–1884) and Mary Ann McBryde (1804–1890). [1]
Cornelius served with the 21st Regiment, North Carolina Infantry, CSA during the Civil War. He lost a leg in the conflict and received a disability discharge. [2]
Cornelius (25) married Mary Jane Barker (16) (born on August 18, 1853, in Robeson, North Carolina; daughter of Henry M. Barker and Nancy Watts (Mercer) Barker) on January 27, 1870, in Robeson, North Carolina. [3] [4] [5] [6]
