Notes

Sarah Joseph's Father Moses was an indentured servant. It is possible that John was as well. There are two known John Sheridan's at the time of arrival. Both went to Kentucky. One was in the Louisville area and wealthy, the other was our John Sheridan.

This following biographical text was culled from my old family web page for the family circa late 1990's. I had paid a researcher in KY to send me copies of the original land deeds that I put in abstract form and are used here. Randy L. Franklin. The reference to Johnson L. Grigg and Susan Sheridan being my paternal great great grandparents. I want also add that I have never come across a document that shows John Sheridan Sr. was born in Cavan, Ireland. Cavan according to various sources was an ancestral home of the Sheridan's of Ireland.

Susan SHERIDAN was the daughter of Joseph D. SHERIDAN and Nancy G. BRIANT. She was married at Graves Co., KY to Johnson L. GRIGG in 1854 and was the mother of Catherine Ida GRIGG, my paternal great grandmother. Our earliest SHERIDAN of record is a John SHERIDAN Sr. who was born in Ireland but by 1791 was a resident of Rockingham Co., VA. John married Sarah JOSEPH (daughter of Moses & Ruth JOSEPH) at Rockingham in 1792. The following entries were culled from my Family Tree Maker database and from several land deed transactions involving various SHERIDAN family members who were residing at Christian Co., KY prior to 1820. Moreover, there is a some Moses JOSEPH family information following the SHERIDAN data. CENSUS: 1820 Christian Co. KY; Head-of-household (age+45), family includes 3 males 10-16, 4 females under 10 years of age, 1 female 16-26, and 1 female age 26-45. John Sheridan Sr. on census enumeration's 1820-1840 within Christian county, KY.

POB: John Sheridan Sr. was born in Ireland. This information was obtained from the 1880 Census for Graves County, KY. His son, John Jr., listed it as the POB for his father.

The other SHERIDAN Rockingham Co., VA marriage listed is a Lewis SHERIDAN & Mary JOSEPH also in 1792. I have no additional information on Lewis SHERIDAN and I am beginning to wonder if this entry is correct. ________________________________________ Notes for Joseph D. SHERIDAN CENSUS: 1850 Trigg Co. Does anyone have any evidence of the immigration of John Sheridan, Sr from Ireland? Many sources state he immigrated in 1801 or 1802, but this is obviously incorrect since he married Sarah Elizabeth Joseph in 1792 (I now have a copy of the marriage bond from Rockingham County, dated December 1792.) Seeking any authoritative info on when John got to America and where he first landed before coming to Virginia. Just fyi...I located a reference to the Sheridan name (generically) and Virginia, Cavan, Ireland. Turns out there is a "town," named Virginia in County Cavan. Wonder if the Irish thought the Shenandoah Valley looked like home!
