Elva Irene Tice was born September 29, 1933 in ‘the Old Stone House’ located in the Pleasant View Community of Mitchell County Kansas. Her parents were Harry Nelson Tice (1894 - 1954) and Bertha Lavina Cooke (1892 - 1986) and her siblings were...Richard Howard Tice and Ruth Elaine (Tice) Courter.
Her early years included primarily ‘inside & quiet activities’ having been diagnosed in infancy with a hernia which resulted in the family doctor cautioning Elva’s parents that she must not engage in strenuous physical activity which could cause dangerous complications. Therefore, Elva spent countless hours in primarily solitary ‘make believe’ activities with paper dolls and in ‘early humanitarian efforts’ in caring for a huge number of cats who lived at their farm; and, she assisted her Mom with cooking, cleaning and other household tasks.
Elva attended grades 1 through 8 at the Dist. #83 Iowa School house; then attended Beloit High School where she stayed ‘in town’ during the week, coming home only on weekends, during holidays and in the summers. Elva graduated from Beloit High School in May, 1951, and after receiving music scholarships in both piano and in bass clarinet from Bethany College in Lindsborg Kansas, Elva attended Bethany College for 2 years as a Music major. Following a 6-week Methodist-sponsored Work Camp to Pharr, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley during the summer of her college sophomore year, Elva decided to transfer to Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kansas to continue her music studies in Piano and Music Education. And, as a result of her experience in South Texas when she felt ‘called’ to missionary service, Elva also expanded her studies to include a minor in Religious Education in preparation to become a Music Missionary with the Methodist Church. After her college graduation in 1955, Elva served as a public school music teacher and band Director at Waldo, Kansas for 1 year beginning in the Fall of 1955.
Elva Irene Tice was born on 29 Sep 1933 in the same Little Rock house her mother was born in, built in the1880’s as part of the original homestead. Her Grandmother, Honora Tilton had run the Sunflower post office from her kitchen until it was consolidated with other community post offices. Sunflower then became part of the Pleasant View Community, south of Beloit, Kansas in the Post Rock region of north central Kansas.
After her marriage, Elva finished her first year of teaching in Waldo, Kansas –then taught music for a second year in the public schools of Hampton, Virginia in 1957-1958. After completing his military service assignment in 1959, Keith and Elva moved for a year to Lawrence, Kansas[1] where Keith pursued graduate studies at the University of Kansas, then was approved for admission at University of Illinois in 1960 where he earned his MA and PhD degrees. In 1965, Keith and Elva moved again – this time to Columbus, Ohio[2] where Keith was a Professor of Physiology in the Medical School at OSU and Elva set up her private piano studio (later known as the Piano Tri-Op). k) Keith and Elva raised their family of 4 children while also becoming foster parents for 13 other children during those years. In 1983 Elva entered graduate school at Ohio State University, completed a Masters degree in Special Education with emphasis in music; then continued on to receive her PhD in Music Education in 1987. m) Keith and Elva Michal raised their family in Ohio and continued their careers there until their retirement in 1994/1995. After their retirement, Keith and Elva moved to Pharr, Texas[3] where they lived until 2015 working on various mission projects as Volunteers in Mission for the United Methodist Church. In November 2015, they moved ‘back up North’ to Medina, Ohio (in 2021); and p) as of 2021 they continue to make their home in Medina, Ohio. Keith & Elva have always agreed that whereas service to community was a strong commitment for them both, it was their children who were and will always be the most outstanding and important factor of their lives!
