Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
James Underwood was a Virginia colonist.
James Underwood was an early pioneer in the Indiana Territory.

James Underwood was born in about 1765 in Culpeper, Virginia, the son of Jonathan Nathan Underwood and Margaret Offill.

The 1782 United States (Continental) Census for Richmond, Virginia lists James at age 14. (If he was 14 in 1782 he was born in 1768).

The 1800 Fayette County, Kentucky Tax List lists James living in Fayette County, Kentucky.

James came to (present-day) Jefferson County in company with Jesse Vawter in the spring of 1806, settling about four miles north of the present city of Madison, on the headwaters of Crooked Creek. The first graveyard in the county was on his farm and is still used for the interment of the old settlers. That is where he was buried. It still bears the name of the 'Underwood Graveyard.'

On 24 October 1807 James and other citizens of Clark County, Indiana Territory (now Jefferson County) signed a petition to Governor William Henry Harrison that he issue a commission to John Vawter as a Justice of the Peace, because they were twenty miles from one.

James was on list of electors, 22 May 1809 in Madison Township, Clark County, Indiana.[1]

James was a jury member in the November 1815 term of the Jefferson Circuit Court.

It is highly unlikely this James Underwood married Keziah Ogden. His death is well documented as 16 Aug 1824, so could not have married in 1832. Also, he and Mary are NOT the parents of Abraham (Underwood-1299), who's bio specifically states he is the son of Caleb and Elizabeth (Wardrum) Underwood.

Interesting that he had children long before his marriage, was there another wife that should be accounted for?

I don't have any other information. I haven't been working on, but once I start up again I'll see what I can find out.
Underwood-5422 and Underwood-1295 appear to represent the same person because: This is the same person. I was working the Source-a-Thon and found this. Please keep Underwood-1295. He is the correct profile.
