Biography

Sarah's origins are unknown. No reliable evidence for her first name being Sarah, or for her last name at birth of Neeld have been found. Her birth year of 1604 is estimated based on her being married about 1624.

"Sarah" married William Fowler in England and had the following children:[1]

  • William Fowler
  • John
  • Ambrose
  • Mary

Torrey shows a marriage of William Fowler to "[Sarah?]" by 1627 in England.[2]

William and Sarah as named as the parents of John, along with two other children, Sarah and William. Her last name is not shown, nor is any further information about her mentioned.[3]

Families of Early Guilford, Connecticut shows William Fowler and Sarah ______ as the parents of William, Sarah, Ambrose and John. Nothing further about Sarah is shown.[4]

Sarah's death information has not been found, nor has any information been found to support the supposition among some online genealogies, that she died shortly after the family arrived in New England.

Research Notes

  • In some online family trees and their related documentation, Sarah's last name is given as Neeld, without sources.
  • She is often said to have accompanied her husband, William Fowler, and their children to New England in 1637, without sources. Her death is also sometimes reported in family trees as being about 1638, shortly after the family arrived in New Haven Connecticut. No death information has been found in Connecticut for her. Whether she actually came to New England with William, or perhaps died before then, is uncertain.
  • This source identified the same children as in The History of the Fowlers, but no wife of William Fowler is named.[5]
  • Another source mentions sons, John and William, and daughter, Mary. No wife is mentioned [6]
  • Families of Early Milford identifies William and his children, William, John, Ambrose, and Mary; no wife's name is mentioned.[7]
  • Holbrook and Allied Families shows William with a son, William; no other children or wife is mentioned.[8]

Unsourced information

"SARAH NEELD was born about 1699, in Dalbury-With-Lees, Derbyshire, England. She married William Fowler in England, before 1620. Sarah immigrated with her husband, William Fowler, to New Haven with the Davenport Company in 1637 and left the following year to settle Milford. They were Puritans. Their children were all born in England. Sarah Neeld died after 1638, in Milford, New Haven, Connecticut, at about age 39."[9]

Numerous sources in Unknown profile show her name was either unknown altogether, or was Sarah ______. Same spouse, children. No quality sources show any events for her beyond the birth of a child in 1636; her actual death information in unknown. Please merge to Unknown-540005

I posted a G2G question about William's wife Sarah, in case you'd like to weigh in: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1156654/was-william-fowlers-1572-1660-wife-sarah-neeld

What sources are there for her parents? Is there a source that Sarah Neeld married William Fowler? Neither link you provided has sources.

Some sources that show WIlliam Fowler's wife's name as unknown are: The history of the Fowlers by Christine Cecilia Fowler, Genealogical memoir of the descendants of Capt. William Fowler, New Haven, Connecticut. by Hon. James Fowler. Anderson's Great Migration series does not mention his wife's name. William's FindAGrave site says his wife's name was Sarah ______, although Sarah Neeld is shown in the spouse field. Sarah Neeld's FindAGrave memorial has no information about her origins. Torrey shows an English marriage for William by 1627 with Sarah?_______ At this point, it doesn't seem that there is enough to say that Sarah's last name was Neeld, except tradition.

Would you please change her last name to Unknown, and reference Neeld and her possible parents in a Research Notes section?
