Biography

William (Urquhart) Urquhart IVth Laird of Meldrum is a member of Clan Urquhart.

William Urquhart was the second son of John Urquhart and Jean Campbell, daughter of Sir Hugh Campbell 5th of Cawdor or Calder.[1]

William succeeded his father in 1726. He then succeeded to the Chieftainship of the Urquhart Family on the death of Colonel James Urquhart in 1741,[2] when he then matriculated arms.[3] William Urquhart, 21st of Meldrum, was the 4th Urquhart Laird of Meldrum. (of 10) by his great.great grandmother Elizabeth Seton, daughter and heiress of Alexander Seton, younger of Meldrum, who married John Urquhart of Craigfintray "Tutor of Cromarty" in 1610 and inherited Meldrum in 1635.[4]

William married Mary, daughter of Sir William Forbes of Monymusk in 1715, the mother of Keith, the next heir of Meldrum, and his fifteen siblings. [5][6]

He then married Anna Scott, who gave him the only surviving child of the union, a son Captain William Urquhart.

For his third spouse, William married Isabella Douglas, the daughter of George Douglas of Skelmuir and Whiteriggs in 1758, when he was sixty years old. Isabella bore William, at least, another four children, including the only son to survive childhood, George, who was the father of Beauchamp Colclough Urquhart, 7th Urquhart Laird of Meldrum. [7]

They had:

  2. Beauchamp.
  3. George.
  4. Tibella.

William Urquhart of Meldrum passed away on the 4th of July 1775 and was succeeded by his son, Keith Urquhart, 5th Urquhart Laird of Meldrum.[8] Keith was the father of James Urquhart, 6th Urquhart Laird of Meldrum.

There are Urquarts, Campbells and McCalders in Prince Edward Iskand as early as c1790. Can any of this tree be tracked to the Island?

Hi Cal, I'm afraid that I am unable to answer your question. I personally have not tracked any Campbells, as they are a huge family, and neither the McCalders, as tracking the Urquharts has taken many, many hours of my time, and numerous funds, to link myself to the tree, as such. Consequently, I have already allotted far more time than I originally expected, to the detriment of the rest of my research lines. Would you be interested in conducting research, as pertains to your own tree research ?
