Biography

Sam is a retired MD and Pediatrician living in Durham, NC. He is a graduate of Duke University where he completed undergraduate and medical degrees. He practiced pediatrics in Durham from 1971 until his retirement. In 1972 he was the first director of the Duke Medical Center's Adolescence Clinic.

Autobiography by Sam Yancy: During WWII my family moved from Mississippi to the state of Washington where my dad worked for the Atomic Energy Commission. I remember that we lived in a desert with rows and rows of gray trailers. Every morning at school we were reminded to not touch any unusual objects outside because they might be bombs dropped from Japanese balloons. After the war we returned to Mississippi and I remember fondly being assigned to serve behind the candy counter at the family owned "five and ten cents store" and going to Memphis to help pick out toys for the Christmas sales. When I was eleven my dad went back to his AEC job and we returned to Washington. The government had put in canals so there was no desert and normal housing had been constructed. After 3 years dad was assigned to AEC headquarters in Washington, D.C. and we moved to Virginia. I attended Fall Church High School. Next I attended Duke University and Duke Medical School. After graduation I married my first wife, Sue, who was a Duke nursing student when we met. I completed 2 years of Pediatric Residency at Duke Medical Center and 1 at the University of Rochester Medical Center. After that I served in the U.S. Navy at the Naval Hospital in Camp Pendleton, California.(Lieutenant Commander) While there I established one of the first Adolescent Medicine Cilnics in the Military Services. After being discharged I returned to Rochester to complete a fellowship in Adolescent Medicine and Behavioral Pediatrics. In 1971 I returned to Durham, NC to join a private pediatric group and practiced for 35 years. While in Durham I established and directed a training program in Adolescent Medicine for pediatric residents at Duke Medical Center. I became a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Duke. During my career I served terms as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Durham Regional Hospital, President of the Society of Adolescent Medicine and President of the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. After my wife, Sue, died I met and married Cathy Ryan. Since my retirement Cathy and I have enjoyed following the careers of my 3 children and watching the growth and development of 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. We enjoy travel, especially to Italy and Africa. I spend much of my time with Habitat for Humanity construction and over the the past 16 years i have helped build over 300 houses in Durham County.
