Biography

Robert Hamby was the son of William Hamby and Margaret Blewett.[1] He was baptised at Dallinghoo, Suffolk, where his father was vicar, on 5 July 1573.[2][3] He was likely to have been born at Dallinghoo.

Before 1613. Robert married Elizabeth Arnold, daughter of John Arnold and heiress to a brother, also called John.[1][2][3] If Elizabeth Arnold was the mother of Robert's first son, baptised in 1604, they must have married before 1604, but the 11-year gap between 1604 and the baptism of his next child suggests that Elizabeth may have been his second wife, his first wife also being called Elizabeth.[4] Elizabeth Arnold would have been the mother of Robert's other children.

Robert had the following children, all named in baptism records as children of Robert and Elizabeth:

Robert and his brother Anthony were executors of their father's Will, which was proved on 22 March 1613/4.[4]

Robert served as a town councillor of Ipswich, Suffolk. He was also steward of the manor of Toppesfield Hall, Hadleigh, Suffolk, working for Charles Veysey.[2][3][4]

Robert's Will was dated 7 June 1635 and proved by his wife on 6 August 1635, so he died between those dates.[2][3] In his Will he:[12][13]

  • described himself as of Ipswich, Suffolk, suggesting that may have been his death place
  • named his daughter Katherine, his daughter Anne (under 21), and his sons William and Robert (both under 21) - the terms of the Will indicate that he had no other surviving children
  • appointed his wife to be sole executor

An Inquisition Post Mortem was held in 12 Charles I (27 March 1636 - 26 March 1637).[14]

In addition to the Bigods and de Quincy (discussed above), Hamby is also a Magna Carta descendant of Robert Fitz Walter and Robert de Roos.

Thanks, The Magna Carta Project has not investigated or verified those trails at this stage. Its main aim at present is to verify and develop at least ONE trail from each Gateway Ancestor identified by Douglas Richardson to ONE Surety Baron, and we have masses of work to achieve that.
