Joseph and Susannah Chiles Martin had a son William, confirmed by Joseph's will. William was living in Surry, North Carolina by 1778.  William wrote his will January 9, 1808. He named wife Rachel, and several children. Images of the will on FamilySearch beginning at: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89GC-C37T?i=1085&cat=457232

The DAR lists one wife, Rachel and lists him for patriotic service, not military.   DAR Patriot #A074604

Since he named a daughter Susannah Chiles Martin (confirmed by his will) it does seem that he was the son of Joseph and Susannah Chiles Martin.

This is a different man from The Rev. William Peters Martin (1745-1829), a lawyer & Methodist Minister, born June, 1745 in King William County, son of John and Elizabeth Martin.  He lived in King William /Halifax/Pittsylvania/Franklin & Botetourt Counties, Virginia.

William Peters Martin married Elizabeth Pendelton. From his obituary: Lived in Halifax Co, Franklin Co, Botetourt Co and “lived 32 years in Lynchburg where he died”.  Full text of "Sketches and recollections of Lynchburg" (archive.org)

Almost all of the information on Martin-9641 is for William Martin, the son of Joseph and Susannah, not William Peters Martin.  I think the real William P needs his own new profile.

P.S.  I have no idea who Mildred Biddulph, attached as a wife, was. She doesn’t seem to be the wife of either of these Williams.

As one of the profile managers, I say please do separate. Kathie's argument is sound and I trust her research. It looks like there were several people making changes and it's hard to follow. I was a mistake of me to merge the 2 William Martin's in 2020.
I have created a new profile for William Peters Martin, who sounds like quite a guy.  He was a lawyer, a surveyor, and a Methodist minister.  He manumitted his slaves when he entered the ministry.
Thanks Kathie :)
