I've managed to trace my family back from Broadstairs Kent to Wiltshire 1816.

There are a lot of gaps and uncertainty. Can anyone help please?

Do you have any specific first and last names of individuals in mind?
Thanks for the reply.

I've found a James Croom born in Wiltshire 1816. He married an Amelia ? in 1838.

I'm hoping he is my great great grandfather so any help with going back further or finding any more of his children would be appreciated.

Kind regards Frank Croom

The 1816 estimate of his birth year could have been based on his age at time of the census. Birth year est. can vary depending on whether the census was taken before or after the person's birth day and month.

Name: James Croome
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 24 Dec 1815
Christening Place: INDEPENDENT,KINGSWOOD,WILTSHIRE,ENGLAND
Birth Date: 07 Nov 1815

Father's Name: Wm. Croome

Mother's Name: Sarah

Summing up. We now have

1851 census St Peter, Kent.:

James Croom born Kingwood, Wilts c.1816 married to Amelia.

Family Search:

James Crooms born Kingswood 1815.

James Crooms married Ann May, St Peters kent, 1836

Ann Crooms died St Peters Kent 1837

Ancestry London marriages:

James Croom married Amelia Smithers Lewisham, 1844

None of which explains how he got to Kent from Wiltshire between 1816 and 1836.

I agree with your summary (I had not traced the first marriage so that is a welcome addition to my CROOM(E) database) and can add a further item:
-- James Croom died in 1866: Death Registration, Apr-May-June 1866 at Isle of Thanet, Kent, Registry Office.
and some speculation on
William Croom his father who I have not identified but in the database there are two possibles:
1.  There is a William CROOME baptised at Calne, Wiltshire, on 12 August 1789. He would be the right age for the father and his father is James, which might add to the probability. Unable to trace further.
2.  There is a William CROOME married 16 August 1802 in Kingswood, Gloucestershire with a son James b. 7 Nov. 1815 in Wickwar, Gloucestershire (probably) and bap. 24 December 1815 at the Independent Chapel (i.e., not Church of England), Kingswood, Gloucestershire (or Wiltshire). Unable to trace further.
I hope this is of use (it is not, so far as I know, in my CROOME tree).

Cheers, Gil Croome

James Croom married Amelia Smither 23 Jan 1844, Lewisham. He was a widower and labourer from St Peters, Isle of Thanet. His father was William. She was from Sydenham.

The problem is I can't find him or her in 1841. It seems likely that his first wife was Sarah, died Thanet 1840.

Sorry if you've already got that.

Thanks for your comment.

I'm not sure if this is the right branch of the family.

I've gone back to a James Croom b.1816 in Wiltshire  who married an Amelia ? in 1838.

i'm hoping he is my great great grandfather.

Regards Frank Croom
If we put Frank's together with mine we definitely have the same person. The 1851 census has James in Broadstairs with Amelia and 3 children, Jabez, Mary and Henry. ages 6,5,1.

James is 35 and was born Kingswood, Wilts. Amelia was born London..I don't think there is any doubt about his birth and marriage to Amelia.

In Kingswood, Wiolts, in 1841 there is a Sarah born 1811 living with Elizabeth born 1891. Bear in mind the 1841 rounding down of ages. Both were born in Wiltshire.
I've now found James Crooms in St Peter Kent in 1841. He is a labourer and appears to be unmarried. His age is said to be 20, but that is rounded.

The puzzle is how he was married and widowed before 1844 when he married Amelia. I'll stick with it.
Thanks for your reply. From my v.limited research I have James Croom b.1816 in Kingswood, Wilts. He married Amelia ? in 1838. He died 1866.

They had at least one child James W. b.1851,d.1929.

He went on to marry an Elizabeth Forman from Bermondsey in 1874. They had 12 children and lived in Chapel Place, Broadstairs.

One of the 12 was Thomas R. b.1883 , d.1940. he married Florence Ellen Bridger Dec.1907. They had 6 children one of which was Robert Edward who was b.1908.

He was my father.

I really hope this is credible. I do not know when or how the Crooms ended up in Kent.

Regards Frank.
I think you can rely on the information you have. The challenge is going to be getting any further back. I can't find anything on Amelia Smither(s). with father John born about 1818.
