Taylor, neither of these dupes is properly sourced. You'll need to provide a good source for why the merge should go in the direction you're recommending.
Great, thanks for the tip. I've marked as as unmerged match!
This merge is safe to go ahead - Gooch-660 and Goche-3 represent the same person because: a round up of all the on-line genealogies listing this couple clearly reveals that these two profiles represent the same person, the same dates & places quoted in both profiles here, are named in one way or another in all the other genealogies. One child "Peter" is listed for Gooch-660 & the list of children provided in Goche-3 shows "Peter" as the eldest child, though not given a profile of his own. THEREFORE A MERGE IS QUITE SAFE HERE - must merge wife too

P.S. still no sources, there are no online OPRs for the two parishes involved, but at least this merge will leave us with one ex online genealogy rather than two versions of the same tree

This merge has been proposed again
How do we know which direction to merge? We need a source for the correct LNAB. Thanks.
Well now, looking at both profiles - one imagines that Gooch-660 will go into Goche-3 and as both profiles bear the name "Gooch" one imagines that "Goche" will be a safe bet for LNAB with "Gooch" as "other last name" The children here have their own alternative spellings anyway.
Valerie, typically, we seek the earliest record or a record of the family name around the time of the birth to determine which spelling to use for the LNAB. For example, his birth or baptism record-- or the marriage record of his parents-- or if a parent or paternal grandparent died and/or left a will around the time the person was born.

That's what determines which direction we go in when the spelling of the LNAB is different across duplicates (or even if the spelling for a given individual changed during his life time).

Then we put alternative spellings in Other Last Names.
