Has a Mennonite Project ever been started?

I found a discussion where there seemed to be some interest, but I don't know if the project ever got off the ground.

The reason I ask is that I have found an awful lot of conflated Mennonite profiles in just two families that I have seen so far! It comes from hasty merges. The same names are used over and over. Entire families have all the children with the middle name of the mother to keep them apart. I don't know if this was their official name, or if genealogists have done that for themselves. Just like I don't believe anyone's nickname was "The Immigrant" that I find in so many profiles.

I think the community should take more care in merging these profiles.

To my knowledge, there isn't one on WikiTree yet. I agree that it would likely be helpful to have one. There is the Volga German project, which might have some overlap, but given the historical uniqueness of the Mennonites, their culture, and their wide-reaching migrations, I think that a project specifically focused on them as a people would be beneficial.

Hello Azure,  I looked at the URL and it was:

Category: Projects Related to Religion

This page does not exist.

Interesting and seems like it would be helpful.  I am currently working on the Shirck/Shirk/Schurch/Schirck/etc.  family and they were Mennonites so their recordkeeping is a bit different at times and even confusing. It is common to use the mother's maiden name as a middle name, but probably not "the Immigrant" :)

Hi Alice,

Please note that this original question is from 2019.

There is a Free Space page for Mennonites in North America, here:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Mennonites_in_North_America

Currently it's just a catch-all of resources, and it could use some organization and expansion.

Then there is is the "Mennonites" category:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Mennonites

This is used to put on people profiles. But again, I don't know if anyone is doing much with the category in reference to the Project page above.

I have done some work on Mennonite families in the U.S., especially in Kansas and Oklahoma, as part of a family tree for others. But I wouldn't say that I'm an expert in the area.
Thank you very much!  I dont consider myself an expert in this field, but I am learning about it as I go.  Thanks for the info.  I will look into it.
