Mary Ann "Polly" Bennett, a daughter of Reuben Bennett and Elizabeth Tarpley, was born about 1787 in Georgia,[1] probably in Wilkes County, where her next older and younger siblings are said to have been born.[2]
Mary Ann Bennett may have first married a man with the surname Christian in Wilkes, Georgia around 1808, as she had a daughter named Laticia Christian (1809-1893), born before her 1812 marriage to Abner Jenkins.
Mary Ann Bennett married Abner Ernst Jenkins in 1812 in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana.[3][4] She was nine years older than her husband Abner.[1] Mary Ann and Abner had eight children:
In 1850, she was living with her husband Abner and two youngest sons in St Tammany Parish, Louisiana.[1]
In Jun of 1854, Mary Ann Bennett separated from her husband Abner and filed for divorce in St. Tammany Parish, but the judge refused to grant the divorce.[4][5] Apparently, in connection with this separation, between Jun 28 and Jun 30, 1854, Mary Ann and her husband Abner conveyed 2560 acres of their joint property to their seven surviving adult children and four grandchildren (children of their deceased daughter Mary Ann Jenkins Knight).[6]
Mary Ann “Polly” Bennett Jenkins died in St Tammany Parish, Louisiana. According to the affidavit in Abner Jenkins' pension file of two people who attended the funeral, Mary Bennett Jenkins died in 1863.[7][8]

↑ The date 8 Apr 1787 used in the birth date field of this record comes from a record of the birth of Mary Ann Bennett, daughter of Thomas T. Bennett and his wife Ann, in St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland County, Virginia. See Fleet, Beverley. “Virginia Colonial Abstracts. This birth record is inconsistent with the 1850 census which says she was born in Georgia and also has different parents.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line:
Bennett-14110 and Bennett-1386 do not represent the same person because: Bennett-14110 and Bennett-1386 have differfent parents. It needs more research
Bennett-14110 and Bennett-1386 appear to represent the same person because: The Mary Ann "Polly" Bennett who married Abner E Jenkins, Sr. in St. Tammany Parish is a member of the family I have been researching from St. Tammany Parish for more than four decades. I have examined the sources cited for both of these profiles and it is clear they are the same person. Although the older profile has more sources and a fuller biography, the sole source relied upon by the newer source is the same 1850 census record for the wife of Abner Jenkins that supports the older profile.
