Biography

Robert de Brewes, Knt., of Stinton (in Salle), Norfolk, Akenham, Suffolk, etc.^[1]

Father: John de Brewes, Knt., Sheriff of Norfolk & Suffolk, Keeper of Norwich Castle, son and heir of John de Brewes, Knt., by Eve de Ufford. Robert's father was born about 1332 and was living in 1394.^[2][3]

Mother: Joan de Shardelow, daughter of John de Shardelow, Knt., of Shardelowe (in Little Barton), Burton Mills, and Cooling, Suffolk, by his wife, Margaret.^[2][3]

Wife: Ela Stapleton, daughter of Miles Stapleton, Knt., of Bedale, Yorkshire, and Ingham, Norfolk, by Ela, daughter of Edmond Ufford, Knt.^[1][3]

Children:

• Sir Thomas Brewes.^[1][4][3]
• Ela Brewes, married William Yelverton, K.B.^[1]
• Margaret Brewes, married John Shelton, Esq.^[2]

Sir Robert Brewes died "shortly before 30 September 1424 (grant of his administration)"^[1] to his widow. Her will was dated 16 October 1456. They were buried in Woodbridge Priory, Suffolk.^[1][4]

Research Notes

Estimated Birth Date: before 1376, probably c1370, based on his father's birth about 1332 and his father's 2nd marriage "before April 1376" (Robert was son of Joan de Shardelow, John's first wife).^[2]

Estimated Marriage Date: before 1414 ("Robert and his wife, Ela, were both legatees in the 1414 will of her father"^[1]). Lewis estimates their marriage as c1400, probably based on the birth dates Lewis gives for their children (c1402, c1404, c1410).^[5] Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry does not include dates for their children. For their son, Thomas, Richardson says only "Thomas, Knt."^[1] but Cokayne gives much more detail.^[4] Their daughter Ela married William Yelverton, as his second wife. William "was probably born about 1400", but Richardson does not give a date for their marriage or their son's birth.^[6] The entry for Robert and Ela's daughter Margaret notes that her husband was baptized 7 July 1406, and the entry for Margaret and John Shelton's son Ralph says he was born about January 1431.^[2]
