John Fawling was the son of Mary Emory, a Cherokee, and Ephraim (Rim) Fawling, a white man. He was born in the Cherokee Nation about 1770. [1] He married Nannie/Nancy Vann, sister of James and Jennie Vann, in March, 1803. [2] They were the parents of one child, a daughter named Ruth. In May, 1805 John challenged his brother-in-law, James Vann, to a duel. Fawling was killed by a single shot. Vann was not wounded. [3]
A previous (unsourced) version of this profile listed his name as "Jonathan Buffington." There is no evidence that Mary Emory had a child by this name.
