Biography

The Delongs

" At an early day in Sandy history the father of James Delong, Samuel Delong, and George Delong, and others of the family, came from the Muskingum country at or near Zanesville, Ohio, and falling in love with a bright-eyed Sandy maiden, courted and married her, and became a good loyal Big Sandian. The Delongs are of French extraction, and the house of Delong in America has become a noted one. The Sandy Valley house of that name has the same ancestral beginning as had the great Arctic navigator of that name, and the great editor at the Golden Gate. The marriage of the elder Delong to a member of one of the most prominent families in the valley connects them not only with the Auxiers, but numerous families of note in the valley. James Delong owns and lives on a very fine farm not far from its mouth on John's Creek. His wife was a "Ward, a kinswoman of Rev. Z. Meek, D. D. One or more of James's sons served in the Federal army during the war. Several of the sons of Mr. Delong went to Texas, and are prosperous citizens of that giant State.
James Delong and family are adherents of the Christian Church, and in politics Republican. Samuel and George Delong live in Martin County, on the Middle Fork of Rock Castle. They both own large boundaries of land, and, like their brother James, are well supplied with money. Samuel and George adhere to the Methodist persuasion, Samuel being a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, at Eden, Ky. They, like their brother, are Republicans. All are people of great respectability."

- The Big Sandy Valley. 1887. p. 387-388.

Timeline
1790 - In parents' home Mifflin (now Centre) Co., Pennsylvania.
1799 - probably with parents in Ohio Co., (West) Virginia.
1802 - Would have settled with parents in Guernsey (then Belmont) Co., Ohio.
1803-5 - Arrived in Kentucky about this time. Ely's "The Big Sandy Valley" says he arrived unmarried, coming from Muskingum Co., Ohio at or near Zanesville. Note his father had bought land, now in Noble Co., Ohio, at the Zanesville Land Office perhaps as early as 1805.
1809 - In May, his brother Joseph either gave or was given a 500-acre mortgage deed to or by Thomas Brown in Floyd Co., Kentucky.
1809 - In May, George and others were ordered to call their hands to erect a bridge across the 'gut' below Thomas Even's field (Floyd Co. Order Book).
1809 - George Brown, Samuel Brown and others were added to George Delong's hands (August Court).
1809 - George and others were to help with the opening of the road near the mouth of Brandy Cag to Cralk's Hill (Oct Court).
1810 - Brother Joseph had credit levy allowed by John Haws (Feb Court).
1810 - George and Joseph returned to Ohio, probably after above Feb. record but prior to May when George Brown replaced George Delong as surveyor of the road from Abbott to the Little Paint River. The work schedule included reference to "Delong's old place". The Delongs do not appear in the Floyd Co. census of 1810; that for most of Ohio is not extant. Records of the Zanesville, Ohio, Land Office show that George and Joseph had land in present Holmes Co., Ohio, 157 acres in Range 6, TWNSHP., 8, Sect. 5.
1810-11 - This seems to be the most likely date for birth of daughter Nancy though censuses show a range from 1809 to 1814 with two indicating Ohio birth, two others Kentucky birth.
1812 - Hardesty's "Presidents, Statesmen and Soldiers" includes a George Delong who served under General Harrison, supporting the tradition that all seven of George Sr's sons served in the War of 1812.
ca 1819 - Returned to Kentucky.
1820 - April census of Floyd Co.. The boys were George, James, Samuel and an unknown fourth. The older girls were Elizabeth and Sarah, the younger Nancy and an unknown. Agnes Auxier's letter (mentioned above under 1806) confirms the family's return to Ohio, says they went to Kentucky for a second time in 1821 (obviously a late date) settling on John's Creek.
1821 - Granted power of attorney Nov 20 to brother Edward of Perry Co., Ohio. Settlement of their father's lands.
1830 - Floyd Co.census. George III and James were 15-19, Samuel was 10-15, the male age 0-5 was likely Nancy's son Harvey b. 1828. The female 20-29 was Sarah (Elizabeth was married and gone), Nancy was 15-19, the girl 10-14 would be the unknown girl 0-9 in 1820, the girl 5-9 yet another unknown and the girl 0-4 would be Frances M.
1837 - Tax list of Floyd Co., KY.
1838-9 - Moved to Lawrence Co., Kentucky. Lawrence had been formed from Floyd in 1821. Since George was in Floyd Co., in 1830 and 1837, he obviously moved physically and did not arrive in Lawrence through land transfer to the new county.
1840 - Lawrence Co., Kentucky census. Originally George was entered as 60-69, changed to 50-59. The correction instead should have been made for Polly. The male 15-19 would be Samuel though he turned 20 this April. The male 10-14 is perhaps Nancy's son Harvey b. 1828 though Nancy herself was not in the home. And the male 0-4 might be Nancy's son Emery b. 1837-8. The girl 15-19 is the unidentified girl 5-9 in 1830. The girl 10-14 is Frances M.
1843 - George (Jr. or III?), James and Samuel appear on a list of Johnson Co., Kentucky residents when it was formed from Floyd, Moran and Lawrence Cos.
