Biography

Charles Dodson was a Georgian.

Charles Dodson was born 5th of April 1809 in Warren County, Kentucky. Charles was the son of Armstead Dodson and Nancy Creel.

Charles married Anna M. Hoard (Hourd) on the 12th March 1829, in Newton County, Georgia.[1]

Charles appears in the 1840 Federal census in Cass County, Georgia (now known as Bartow County). Charles' household appears as follows: 1 male under age 5; 1 male age 5 thru 9; 1 male age 30 thru 39; 2 females under age 5; 1 female age 30 thru 39; 2 female slaves under age 10; and 1 female age 24 thru 35.[2]

Charles' wife Ann died in September, 1849. Ann's death is listed in the 1850 Federal census Mortality Schedules for Butts County, Georgia. The list gives Ann's age as 39, born in South Carolina, month of death as September, and cause of death as cholera.[3]

Charles married as second wife the widow Martha Meredith Byars on the 4th of April, 1850 in Butts County, Georgia.[4]

Charles appears in the 1850 Federal census in Butts County, Georgia. Charles' household appeared as follows: Charles age 41, born Kentucky and Martha age 19, born South Carolina. There are no children listed in the household.[5]

Charles' wife Martha Byars died sometime before June, 1857; as Charles married his third wife Susan Giles on the 2nd of June, 1857 in Butts County, Georgia.[6]

Charles appears in the 1860 Federal census in Butts County, Georgia. Charles' household appeared as follows: Charles age 51; Susan age 37; Nancy age 22; Mary age 21; Humphrey P. age 17; Green L. age 15; Martha age 13; Alfred age 11; Joel age 9; Charles age 6; William A. age 2; Joseph H. age 3 months; and Nancy Giles age 80, born North Carolina.[7]

Charles' wife Susan died sometime before April 1866; as Charles married his fourth wife the widow Mrs. Sarah J. Crane Herren on the 17th of April, 1866, in Butts County, Georgia.[8]

Charles appears in the 1870 Federal census in Clayton County, Georgia. Charles' household appeared as follows: Charles age 61; Sarah Jane age 27; Joseph H. age 9; Mary S. Herrings age 11; and Caroline Herrings age 9.[9]

Charles' date of death is currently known but occurred sometime after 1870.
