Biography

Cornelius Jay DuBois was a son of Dr. Henry Augustus DuBois and Catherine Helena Jay. He was born in New York City on 31 August 1836. ^[1]

He graduated from Columbia University School of Law in 1861. After the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War he went to Washington, DC, with the 7th Regiment. He was recruited into Company D of the 27th Connecticut Volunteers at New Haven and was made a captain. He served under General Hancock in Zooks's Brigade at Aquia Creek, Falmouth, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. He was severely wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg on 2 July 1863 and was rescued by his brother Henry DuBois, M.D., a U.S. Army surgeon, but he never fully recovered from his wounds. General Hancock and Colonel Brook both testified to his gallantry. He recovered sufficiently to resume his military service, becoming Adjutant of the 20th Connecticut Volunteers and serving under Generals Hooker and Sherman in Georgia. He was brevetted Major by the U.S. President for bravery at Gettysburg and Lt. Colonel for gallantry at Resaca. ^[1]

After the war, he received an M.D. degree from Yale Medical College and spent some time abroad for his health. He returned to New Haven, where he spent the remainder of his life and died on 11 February 1880.^[1]
