In 1786, soon after his arrival in Springfield, Lewis Richard Morris married for the first time. His wife was Mary Dwight, sister of the celebrated president of Yale College, Timothy Dwight. The marriage, however, proved unsuccessful. Indeed, the Dictionary of American Biography states that Morris "left her soon after their marriage" although a daughter, Louisa M., was born of that union .
