Born about 1537 Jane FitzAlan was daughter of Henry FitzAlan Earl of Arundel and his wife, Katherine Grey. Blessed with a father who believed in educating his daughters as well as his son Jane grew up to be a considerable scholar. [1]
At some time before March 1552 she married Lord John, Baron Lumley son of George Lumley and his wife, Jane Knightley. [2] Certainly it was as Lady Lumley that she attended the Coronation of Queen Mary on 1 October 1553.
Lady Jane (FitzAlan) Lumley died on 27 July 1578, her burial taking place at St Clement Danes on 19th August, 1578 [3] [4]. During the 1590s, her body, and those of her 3 children were removed to Cheam. Here they were placed within a tomb in the chancel of St Dunston's Church, where John Lumley created an elaborate memorial for himself and his family. The chapel, survives as the Lumley Chapel, now within the churchyard of the rebuilt parish church. [5] [6]
The following conflicts with ODNB "She was buried on 9 March 1576/77, at Cheam in Surrey, England, as were her three children, all of whom died in infancy."[7]
