Biography

"Simon Giffin and his Descendants" by Florence Giffin Martin and Mary Alsted Strange, 1971, p. 42, gives Hardwick, Massachusetts as his birth place, as does his birth certificate. Note the author of this genealogy was David's grandson.

(III) David Doane is also referred to as David Dodge, was third son of Simon (2) and Abigail (Higgins) Giffin, born Sept. 8, 1766, in Bennington, Vermont[1], and resided for a time in Hardwick, Vermont.

In 1800 he settled on land in Oswegatchie township, St. Lawrence county, New York, where he purchased land on the St. Lawrence river, six miles above Ogdensburg[2] [3] [4].

He was a blacksmith by trade, and operated a shop, while clearing and tilling his large farm. He was active and successful and built five miles of the road from Morristown to Ogdensburg, under contract. An intimate friend of Nathan Ford, agent of the Ogdens at Ogdensburg, he was associated with the latter in securing and locating settlers, and named one of his sons for him. As captain of the local militia he was active in protecting the river front in the war of 1812[5], for which he was especially fitted by a thorough knowledge of the territory on both sides of the stream.[6]

He married in 1794, Jerusha Thompson, born March 29, 1771, died Dec. 13, 1849[7], the daughter of Captain Rufus Thompson who died during the Revolutionary War in Bennington Vt[8]. Children:

  1. Harriet, born March 30, 1794; married James Stewart, a farmer; resided at Waterloo, N.Y.[9] [10] [11], who died in 1864.
  2. David, Feb. 5, 1796, at Fort Ann; who married Ann Giffin, daughter of Edward[12] [13], and died Oct. 4, 1880 at Brier Hill, St. Lawrence county
  3. George, born Feb. 2, 1798, who married Anna Maria Stevens and then Sarah Hill[14] [15], and who died May 11, 1870; buried at Morristown
  4. Almeda, born March 4, 1800, wife of John F. Davis[16] [17] lived on a farm on Black lake, in Oswegatchie.
  5. Henry B., born Nov. 22, 1802, who married Ester Spencer, died May, 1871; was a farmer, moved to Wisconsin with his family[18] [19]
  6. Nathan Ford, mentioned below, who was born in 1805, married Mary Galloway[20], and then married Mary Southwick, and who died in 1891[21]. Note that Nathan's son Dan Spafford Giffin was the author of the Simon Giffin genealogy noted here.
  7. William Canfield, born Feb. 27, 1809, who married Mary Dawson[22], and who died April 21, 1849 (See Findagrave Memorial #27194144)
  8. Jerusha Thompson, born Aug. 6, 1813; wife of James Johnson Mason; died Oct. 18, 1845; buried at De Peyster. (see Findagrave Memorial #25533301).

David Doane Giffin died 2 Apr 1840, in his seventy-fourth year., and is buried on the Giffin Farm in St. Lawrence County, New York, USA[23]

Note

JAMES S. GIFFIN is well-known as a pioneer of the county, and as the owner of the old Valley House, which was in former years a very popular place for public entertainment. Mr. Giffin was born in the town of Oswegatchie, St. Lawrence County, N. Y., September 1, 1827. His grandfather, David Giffin, emigrated from Wales and settled in Canada, where he began the manufacture of scythes by hand. Later he moved to New York, and cleared the farm on which his son Henry and his grandson, James S., were born, and which at last accounts was in possession of his descendants. During the War of 1812, David Giffin served as Captain of a company. For a wife he chose Jerusha Thompson, and of this union Henry Giffin, the father of our subject, was born, November 22, 1801. In the same county Henry Giffin married Miss Esther Spencer, who was a native of Rutland, Vt., and two years his junior. Her father came to this country with La Fayette, and under him took part in the Revolutionary War.
