Biography

Mercy Godfrey was born between 1746-1755. At the time of her marriage she was a resident of Chatham. She married on 23 Jan 1766, Joseph Small(ey) of Harwich. By the enumeration in the 1790 census, they were living in Falmouth with a household containing 8 females, along with Joseph and 4 other males.

Mercy (Godfrey) Small was a party to the following land deed:[1]

"Know all men by these presents, that we James Nickerson & his wife Kesiah of Dennis, Joseph Small and his wife Mercy of Falmouth, Jermiah Eldredge & his wife Lydia, Elijah Small, George Phillips & his wife Dorothy, Obed Brooks & his wife Sally & Phebe Weeks Jr. all of Harwich and Samuel Tripp in consideration of thirty two dollars & thirty three cents to us paid by John Howes of Chatham in the County of Barnstable the receipt whereof we do hereby acknowledge, have remised, released, and forever quit claim, and do ... by these presents, remise release and ... unto the said John Howes & his heirs and assigns forever the .... the right title & interest that we have in & unto that part of the estate of Jonathan Eldrege late of Chatham deceased that was set off to his widow Patience as her right of dower it being the right that fell to us by Bashua Godfrey deceased & it being that half of our said right, that was purchased & improved by John Howes and consist of cleared land & meadow. To have & to hold the aforementioned premises with all the privileges and appurtenances thereunto belonging to him the said John Howes & heirs and assigns ???? that neither we the said grantors nor our heirs or any other person or personsclaiming from or under us or them or in the name right or stead upon ?? by any ?? means, have claim or demand any right or title to the aforesaid premisis, or their appurtenances or any part or parcel therof forever. In witness whereof we the said grantors have hereunto set our hands & seals this twenty fifth day of march in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and eleven. Relationships: I believe that Mercy was the aunt of Phebe Weeks, daughter of Barbara/Barbary (Godfrey) Weeks. James Nickerson's wife was Keziah Godfrey, daughter of Jeptha Godfrey & Bathsheba Knowels. Obed Brooks' first wife was Sally/Sarah Weeks, another daughter of Barbara (Godfrey) Weeks.
