Biography

Jediah Higgins Jr, son of Jediah Sr and Mary Newbold Higgins, was born April 11 1691 and died before April 17 1772 the day his will was approved. He married Hannah Stout, daughter of Jonathan and Anne Bollen Stout, in her hometown, Hopewell, NJ, in 1715.^[1][2]

Jediah was born in Piscataway (Edison), Middlesex County, Province of East Jersey. [In 1702 East and West Jersey united to became the Province of New Jersey.] In his teens, he moved with his parents down the trail [Rte 27] to the Milestone River, where his father established his farm near what became the town of Kingston. The highway divided Somerset and Middlesex counties, but the boundaries along the road fluctuated. Although his home was on the north [Somerset Co.] side of the road, his will says "I Jediah Higgins of Kingston in the Corporation of New Brunswick in Middlesex County, yeoman" His father, who had lived in the same house, is recorded as being 'of Somerset County".

Research Notes

Higgins (Higgens) Family Burying Ground ^[4] This old private cemetery is located on the south side of Route 27,.1 mile south of Raymond Road. The remains of this cemetery are in a small wooded area between a grassy area and a field. According to a family member, several slaves were buried in the area. Part of the cemetery was disturbed when a pipeline was laid nearby. Only two stones were found in 1975. Higgins, Charles W., son of Chas. and Ellen, d.
