Tony Varey writes (March 2017):

From the Stewart Clan Magazine December 1922:

EBENEZER STEWART born in Newbury about 1676, was a soldier in the Canada expedition of 1690. He married May 23,1698, Elizabeth Johnson in Rowley. His homestead in Rowley was "northwest of Rye plain bridge and Long hill”: the farm now is in the Byfield parish, Georgetown, on Warren street. He was a husbandman and innholder and was one of the selectmen of Rowley in 1726. His descendants, without exception, use the form Stuart. His wife was admitted to the Byfield church May 23,1714, and then baptized. She died Apr. 12, 1749, aged about 72, and on Apr. 30,1749, Ebenezer died, aged about 73, within three weeks of his wife.” Administration on his estate was granted May 8,1749, to his oldest son Robert [Essex probate, 328:511]. The heirs-at-law were: sons Robert, Richard, John and Charles; daughter Sarah Stewart alias Webster; heirs of Elizabeth Webster, deceased; daughter Ann Stewart alias Lowell;daughter Mercy Stewart alias Clough; and daughter Jane Stewart [Essex probate, 329: 54, 55]. 1 Sarah, May 19, 1699; = Dec. 1, 1719, John Webster of Kingston, N. H. 2 Robert, Nov. 26,1701; = Dec. 11, 1727, Ann Adams, Newbury 3 Richard, Oct. 15,1704; =Apr. 4,1728, Judith Poore, Newbury 4 Elizabeth 1706; =Feb. 17,1725-6, Benjamin Webster of Kingston 6 John, Oct. 20,1709; -i-Nov. 10,1732, Hannah Bailey 6 Ann, Mar. 27,1712; 1 =June 13,1737, Nathaniel Brown, (2) Samuel Lowell 7 Mary (Mercy), Oct. 26,1715; =Dec. 26, 1734, Ezra Clough of Kingston 8 Charles, May 31,1718; =Dec. 31,1741, Sarah Fisk, Newbury 9 Jane, Aug. 7,1720; =Dec. 24,1751, William Davis of Newtown, N. H. To be continued

This Elizabeth Johnson(-17588) attached as wife to Ebenezer was born in 1670 in Andover and was a Salem witch. According to http://www.legendsofamerica.com/ma-witches-i-j.html "Elizabeth Johnson. Jr. appears to have never married and the date and place of her death are unknown."

Based on the above it is simply not feasible for Elizabeth Johnson-17588, whose history through the Salem witch trials is well documented, to have been this Ebenezer Stewart's wife and to have borne him all his children.

And her daughter Mehitable Stewart-4883 is not listed above, nor can I find a plausible birth for her. There was a Mehitable Stuart born in 1710 but in New Hampshire, not Massachusetts, and there is a death record which accords with her profile. However, I can find no connection and therefore both Elizabeth J-17588 and Mehitable S-4883 should be detached from Ebenezer Stewart-4272.

Here's Mehitable's deasth record:

  • Mehetabel Foster

in the Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988

Name: Mehetabel Foster Event Type: Death Death Date: 4 Feb 1761 Death Place: Lunenburg, Massachusetts Spouse Name: Benjamin Foster

Here is Ebenezer's marriage record:

  • Elizabeth Stewart

in the U.S., New England Marriages Prior to 1700 Name: Elizabeth Stewart Maiden Name: Johnson Gender: Female Birth Year: About 1677 Marriage Date: 23 May 1698 Marriage Place: New England, USA Death Year: 1749 Spouse: Ebenezer Stewart

The actual typed text reads as follows: STEWART, Ebenezer (1676-1749) & Elizabeth JOHNSON (? 1677-1749); 23 May 1698; Rowley

Johnson-26399 and Johnson-17588 do not represent the same person because: These two have different births, deaths and children. The only thing they had in common was attachment to Ebenezer Stewart as husband. However, this attachment was in any event erroneous (see rationale notes on the profiles).
