Biography

Philip Mead was born around 1767[1] to Jeremiah and Abigail (Lockwood) Mead.[2] His parents had likely not yet removed to Dutchess County from Greenwich Connecticut before Philip was born.

Philip was married to a woman named Hannah, who was purportedly a Townsend, though another possibility is Genung/Ganung. See below.

Philip and Hannah and two children were living in a household next to his parents in "Fredericksontown" (Frederickstown), Dutchess County in 1790.[3]

In 1800, they were living in Greene County, next to Timothy and Esther (Townsend) Lockwood.[4] Esther was the widow of Philip's brother Jeremiah and quite possibly a close relative of Hannah, his wife. Timothy was Philip's cousin by his aunt Abigail (Mead) (Lockwood) Guernsey -- not to be confused with his mother Abigail (Lockwood) Mead. They were more distant cousins on the Lockwood side.

The neighborhood was much the same in 1810, though more relatives were listed as heads of household, primarily because children began to spread out.[5]

Philip and Hannah then removed to Cayuga County.

Philip Mead of the town of Mentz executed his last will on 24 September 1827, witnessed by Rufus Main, Garret Van Sickle, and Harry White, making bequests to:[6][7]

  • wife Hannah
  • surviving children of my son Jeremiah, deceased
  • daughter Huldah Wright
  • daughter Abigail Townsend
  • daughter Deborah Tallman
  • son Daniel T.
  • son Stephen
  • son Benjamin
  • son Jeduthan
  • son Isaac

Executors: Archibald Ross, Samuel Root, son Daniel T. Mead.

Philip died on 23 June 1828, aged 61 years.[1] His will was proved on 23 October 1828.[6]

Wife Hannah's Identity

Although Abbe asserted Philip Mead's wife was a Townsend, it seems possible she was the daughter Hannah Mead who was named in the will of John Genung in 1804.[8] Two of John Genung's siblings married Townsends. John also named a daughter Lucy Mead in his will, though, and she is thus far not traced. His will shouldn't be taken as proof, one way or the other, as no mention of his daughter Hannah Mead's husband was made.
