The death of A.H. Post of' Hinesburg occurred the third day of' May 1881, he having lived to the mature age of eighty seven years and seven months. He was the youngest of a family of seven children who came to this town in May 1801 with his parents and their family from West Hampton, Massachusetts. His father, Deacon Oliver Post a tannar, currier, and shoe maker by trade, was connected with the early history of the Congregational Church of this place. He did service in the Revolutionary War (sic) [17] being at one time stationed in a fort on the Susquehanna River near Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania six months.
The deceased's mother Experience Submit Hoyt lived to her ninety third year. All the family lived to advanced age and were inclined to christian principles. The deceased has always lived in this town with the exception of two years of his early life. He went to Burlington as a volunteer at the battle of Plattsburg in 1812, has changed residence six times. He was quite ready to contribute to building, laying out roads, erection of churches, schools and other profitable public enterprises.
He built for himself or repaired one or more buildings for forty four consecutive years, represented the town in 1856-57 including the extra session after the burning of the state house, got up the charter for the first cheese factory in town and the present cemetery, besides contributing largely to the enterprises. His life has been characterized as peaceful with all men and diligent in business, in politics and Abolitionist or Republican. He connected himself with the Baptist church at its organization and contributed largely towards the erecting of its present house of worship, being one of the committee.
In later years he embraced what seemed to him a present truth and united with the Free Christian Church (Adventist) assisting in the erection of their house and was chosen Deacon in 1874. He was twice married, living only about two years with his first wife when she died leaving one child. He then married the present surviving wife, Mercy Marenda McEwen, with whom he has lived sixty one years in the mutual labors, cares and interests of life.
He has had four sons and two daughters, two sons and one daughter now surviving, Mr. C.C. Post, Mr. H.A. Post and Mrs. William Partch. The deceased was a kind husband and father, faithful in all the departments of life and died in hope of the resurrection to eternal life through Christ, after an illness of fifteen months prostration. He leaves a Will.
