According to the Pope County, IL Death Register #1 page 36 John W. Rector was born in AL, and died Jan 20, 1881. Tombstone inscription from Sulpher Springs Cemetery in IL, says he died Feb 20, 1881, which cannot be correct as the death report was dated Feb 16, 1881. His tombstone also says he was born June 22, 1828, other sources say Jul 22, 1828. It looks like the tombstone is off by one month on birth and death.

1860 census says John W. was born in TN. Ann Baughman says he was born in Sevier County, TN. Pope County, IL death register says AL.
