She was born and raised in Mulberry, Lincoln, Tennessee.[1] She reported her birthdate on the 1900 census as Mar 1848.[2] Based on her reported age at death of 86 years, 27 days, her date of birth was calculated to be 9 Nov 1847.[3] She was the second child of four siblings; Samuel, Nancy and Susan.

Arepha married James J. Cunningham on 4 Jan 1866 in Lincoln County, Tennessee.[4] They would have nine children; John Wilson, James D., Joseph E., [sic: Louella], George Daniel, Peter Lonzo, Felix Edgar, Flora May, and Nancy Pearl.
