Biography

"Mason, Colonel Lemuel, son of Lieutenant Francis Mason, was born in Virginia about 1628; was justice of Lower Norfolk county from 1649; sheriff, 1664 and 1668; member of the house of burgesses, 1654, 1657, 1658, 1659, 1660, 1663, 1666, 1675, 1685, 1692; colonel of the militia in 1680, and presiding justice. His will, dated June 17, 1695, was proved September 15, 1702. he married Anne, daughter of Henry Seawell, of Seawell's Point (Sewell's Point)."^[1]

"He (Lemuel) was born 1628, just twenty years of age when his father died, and he was twenty-one when he married Alice (Anne) Seawell, five years younger than himself. She was a daughter of Henry Seawell, merchant, Burgess for Elizabeth City in 1632, and for Norfolk County in 1639. He died about 1644 (1649. The estate of Mr. Matthew Phillips (Phripp?), for estate of said Henry Seawell, as it was left at the decease of the said Alice, wife of the said Henry.) The administratrix was Anne, wife of said Phillips, whom Alice had married soon after her husband died.^[2]

Anne Sewell Mason was born in 1634. She is the daughter of Henry Sewell and Alice Willoughby. She was married to Col Lemuel Mason and died Jun 1705. ^[3]
